Gray Wolves Withstand Walsh Rally to Earn Victory

Faith Fisher's (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) goal with 3:24 proved to be the game-winner on Sunday afternoon as the Gray Wolves defeated Walsh 14-13 at Vasco Field in North Canton, Ohio.

Fisher's goal came after the Cavaliers rallied from five goals down midway through the second half to tie the contest down the stretch.

"We had a well-rounded team effort both offensively and defensively today," head coach Paul Sieben said afterwards.  "We showed a great deal of mental toughness holding off Walsh in the final minutes.  We played through difficult situations to achieve the win."

Lourdes built a 5-0 lead midway through the first half.  Mackenzie Moriarty (Roseville, Minn./Roseville H.S.) started the scoring 5:40 into the game before Fisher and Haley Brown (Temperance, Mich./Bedford H.S.) added goals.  Katie Cerveny (Erie, Mich./Mason Senior H.S.) found the back of the cage with 18:52 left in the first half while Alyssa Long (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn H.S.) added a tally just over  a minute later as five different players accounted for the first five goals.

"The first 15 minutes our offense and defense played the best they have all year," Sieben added.

After Walsh found the scoreboard, Kelsey Schiel (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame H.S.) put Lourdes back on top by five goals.  The Cavaliers responded with three unanswered goals to pull to within two only to see the Gray Wolves answer with three goals of their own.  Moriarty, Long, and Brown all tallied their second markers of the game.

Leading 9-5 with under a minute remaining before halftime, Fisher and Schiel each scored one more time to give the Gray Wolves a six-goal lead at the break.

Walsh scored first in the second half only to see Long respond to make it a 12-6 lead for Lourdes.  The Cavaliers cut into the lead with two goals to pull within four, midway through the second half before Jessie Frost (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) made it 13-8 Gray Wolves with a goal with 13:21 to play in the game.

The Cavaliers made a comeback, scoring five times in less than five minutes to tie the game with 7:54 to play before Fisher's tally gave Lourdes the win.

Margaret Janiga (East Aurora, N.Y./Nichols H.S.) made seven saves in the cage to earn the win in goal for the Gray Wolves.  Moriarty corralled a team-high four ground balls while Frost added three more.  Hannah Cullis (Fort Worth, Texas/Central H.S.) caused four turnovers defensively.

Steffi Zepp led Walsh (3-5) with five goals while Lane Brunkala added four tallies.

Lourdes (3-7) will return to action on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Aquinas.  The game will begin at 1 p.m. at The Legacy Center in Brighton, Mich.
