Lourdes closed out its 2015 softball season on Thursday afternoon, earning a 3-2 walk-off victory over Siena Heights before eventually being eliminated by Aquinas 7-5 to place fourth in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament held at the Art Van Sports Complex in Rockford, Mich.
Â
The seventh-seeded Gray Wolves opened the day with an elimination game against eighth-seeded Siena Heights and fell behind in the third when the Saints plated a pair of runs.
Â
Lourdes cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth as
Erica Marvaso (Huron Township, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on
Kayla Encalado's (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) sacrifice bunt.Â
Ashley Yeager (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) delivered a run-scoring single up the middle to pull the Gray Wolves within 2-1.
Â
Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) kept the Saints off of the scoreboard the rest of the way, tossing a complete game six-hitter. She struck out five and walked just two before eventually recording the win (7-11).
Â
The Gray Wolves entered the bottom of the seventh with the one-run deficit when
Breyahna Guy (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) led off the final frame with a single.Â
Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) followed with a bunt single and the duo advanced 60 feet with stolen bases.Â
Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) delivered the game-winning hit, a single up the middle. Mosiniak was originally held at third but crossed the plate with the winning run after the centerfielder bobbled the ball, extending the Gray Wolves' season.
Â
Yeager, Megyesi, and Mosiniak all finished with two hits in the game as Lourdes tallied nine against Morgan Warfield, who suffered the complete game loss (4-7) for Siena Heights (23-21). She fanned six and walked four while allowing two earned runs.
Â
Lourdes advanced to meet Aquinas in the Gray Wolves' third elimination game in less than 20 hours, and the two schools were scoreless through two innings.
Â
The Saints took the lead in the top of the third with four runs on four hits. The Gray Wolves answered with two in the bottom of the inning as
Alyssa Schaub (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) led off with a triple and scored on Mosiniak's sacrifice fly. With two outs,
Hayley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) doubled and scored one batter later on a single by Megyesi.
Â
Aquinas (24-22) responded with two more runs in the fourth inning, building a 6-2 lead. The game stayed a four-run contest until the bottom of the fifth when Schaub doubled and Mosiniak singled to put runners on the corners with one out. Roberts connected on her fourth home run of the season to left-center, pulling Lourdes to within one.
Â
Erika Whittingston relieved Caitlyn Hensel, who earned the win (9-5), and would retire all eight batters she would face down the stretch to earn her first save of the season.
Â
The Saints added an insurance run in the seventh inning, to earn the two-run victory.
Â
Schaub, Roberts, and Megyesi each tallied two hits to account for six of the Gray Wolves' seven in the game.
Â
Samantha Shirling suffered the loss (2-6) in the circle, allowing all seven runs on 11 hits in five innings of relief.Â
Â
The defeat marked the final contest for the careers of three Lourdes (11-19) seniors: Yeager, Schaub, and
Hannah Spangler (Toledo, Ohio/Northview H.S.).
