Hillsdale Outslugs Lourdes in Tuesday Twinbill

Hillsdale tallied 25 runs and 28 hits on Tuesday afternoon as the Chargers took both ends of a doubleheader from Lourdes by scores of 13-5 and 14-6.

Lourdes started quickly in the opener as Alyssa Schaub (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) led off the game with her third round-tripper of the season.

The Chargers responded in the bottom of the inning, plating five runs while batting around.  Hillsdale would score in every inning of the opener, tallying two runs in both the second and third innings while scoring the final three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Gray Wolves added a run in the second as Schaub drove in a run with a bases loaded fielder's choice.  A pair of errors by Hillsdale allowed Lourdes to plate two runs in the third.  Jaime Newman (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton H.S.) singled home Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) while Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) also crossed the plate courtesy of a throwing error.

A double by Schaub and a single by Mosiniak plated Lourdes final run of the game in the top of the fourth inning.

Schaub, Newman, and Erica Marvaso (Huron Township, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) led Lourdes 10-hit attack with two hits each, but four errors defensively by the Gray Wolves helped the Chargers cause.

Bekah Kastning went 4-for-4 with a triple and three runs batted in to pace Hillsdale's 16-hit effort in the opener.

Sarah Klopfer earned the win (4-1) in the circle for the Chargers, going the distance.  She allowed four earned runs while striking out two.  Samantha Shirling (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood H.S.) suffered the loss (0-3), surrendering seven runs, six of which were earned, in two innings in the circle.

In game two Lourdes scored three first inning runs after two were out.  Mosiniak singled and Hayley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) drew a walk before Megyesi hit a three-run home run, her first blast of the season.

Hillsdale answered in the bottom of the first as Klopfer hit a three-run shot of her own, taking advantage of a pair of walks ahead of her.

Lourdes retook the lead as Mosiniak singled home Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.), who had reached on an error to start the inning.  A two-run single by Gallaher in the fourth increased the Gray Wolves' lead to 6-3, but those would be the final runs Lourdes would score on the afternoon.

Hillsdale sent eight batters to the plate in the fourth inning, scoring five times, capped with a three-run home run from Kelsey Gockman, to take an 8-6 lead.  The Chargers ended the game in the fifth, scoring six straight runs with one out, closing the game with a two-run home run from Danielle Garceau.

Klopfer returned to the circle for the final 1.1 innings of relief in game two to earn her second win (5-1) of the day while Gallaher suffered the loss (1-3), allowing 11 runs on nine hits and eight walks in 4.1 innings of work.

Megyesi, Mosiniak, and Kayla Encalado (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) had two hits each for Lourdes, which tallied eight on the afternoon.  Klopfer went 4-for-4 at the plate with six runs batted in to lead Hillsdale (11-13).

Lourdes (3-7) will return to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action this weekend, beginning on Saturday as the Gray Wolves travel to Northwestern Ohio.  First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at Racer Field in Lima, Ohio.
