Lourdes jumped out to a 7-2 lead at halftime on Saturday afternoon on the way to a 13-7 victory over Ohio Northern at Wildcat Stadium to wrap up the non-conference portion of the Gray Wolves' schedule.
Â
Ohio Northern struck first 5:36 into the contest, but that would be the only lead the Polar Bears would hold all day. Lourdes tied the game on a
Jessie Frost (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.) goal just 1:19 later and
Shelby Kellar (Holland, Ohio/Saint Ursula H.S.) put the Gray Wolves on top for good with 21:22, scoring a short-handed goal.
Â
The Gray Wolves would score five straight goals before Ohio Northern found the back of the cage again with 10:49 to play before halftime, but Lourdes added two more tallies to take a 7-2 lead into the break.
Â
After
Klarque Scott (Chicago, Ill./Montini Catholic H.S.) increased the lead to six just 37 seconds into the second half and Lourdes never looked back. The Polar Bears pulled to within four, 8-4, but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way.
Â
Frost and
Alyssa Long (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn H.S.) each scored three times while Kellar and
Katie Cerveny (Erie, Mich./Mason Senior H.S.) had two goals each. Scott,
Anna Zofchak (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover H.S.), and
Anna Marie Weber (North Canton, Ohio/Jackson H.S.) had the other three goals for the Gray Wolves.
Â
"We had seven different girls involved in the scoring, which I believe is the most we've ever had in one game," head coach
Paul Sieben said. "Our freshmen are really making an impact."
Â
Kiley Ketteman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson H.S.) made 12 saves in goal for Lourdes while
Hannah Cullis (Fort Worth, Texas/Central H.S.) collected a team-high four ground balls.
Â
"Kiley had an excellent performance today," Sieben added. "She made four free shots saves at the end of the first half which were big. Hannah gave us another strong defensive performance as well today."
Â
Lourdes outshot the Polar Bears 37-23 overall and held a 24-14 advantage in ground balls.
Â
Maggie Fuller and Madeline Storr each scored twice for Ohio Northern (1-3) while Shannen Larsen Van Alstine made 12 saves between the posts.
Â
Lourdes (3-2) will open up Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Davenport. The opening draw is set for 5 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
