The NAIA's sixth-ranked Lourdes men's lacrosse team wrapped up its season-opening four-game road trip on Wednesday evening, suffering a 15-9 defeat at the hands of Dayton, the top-ranked team in the MCLA, at Stuart Field in Dayton, Ohio.
"This was a great early season test," head coach
Patrick Yannarelli said afterwards. "We played hard the entire game and had our opportunities to make it a closer game. This allows us to see the areas we need to focus on and get better. We are looking forward to practice tomorrow and working on the areas that need to be addressed as well as continue to practice the areas we are doing well."
Lourdes kept the game close for more than a quarter, trailing just 7-5 at halftime as the Flyers scored the final before intermission with just 48 seconds to play. Dayton added the first three goals of the third quarter to increase the advantage to five. The Gray Wolves pulled within three, 12-9, with just under 10 minutes to play, only to see Dayton score the game's final three tallies.
Dalton Vowles (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) scored a team-high four goals for Lourdes while
Jared Yoshino (Toledo, Ohio/Southview H.S.) and
Dylan Gill (Holland, Ohio/Saint Francis H.S.) each found the back of the cage twice.
Danny Bichsel (Westerville, Ohio/North H.S.) added a goal as well for Lourdes.
Michael Glaser scored five times and Jacob Rogan added four goals for Dayton (4-0).
Yoshino collected a team-high five ground balls for Lourdes while
Conner Mishler (Lambertville, Mich./Saint John's H.S.) made 12 saves in goal.
Lourdes (3-1) will play its home opener on Saturday afternoon as the Gray Wolves welcome Grove City to Wildcat Stadium. The opening faceoff is set for 4 p.m.
