For 30 minutes on Friday evening Lourdes went toe-to-toe with third-ranked Davenport in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference semifinals, but the Panthers shutout the Gray Wolves in the second half on the way to a 14-3 victory at the DU Turf Field in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Â
After more than 10 minutes of scoreless play,
Katie Cerveny (Erie, Mich./Mason Senior H.S.) put the Gray Wolves on the scoreboard after receiving a feed from
Jessie Frost (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton H.S.).
Â
After the Panthers tied the contest,
Alyssa Long (Auburn, Mich./Auburn H.S.) and Cerveny scored back-to-back tallies, giving Lourdes a 3-1 advantage with 14:17 remaining in the opening half.
Â
Davenport pulled within one two-and-a-half minutes later and tied the game with 6:02 remaining in the stanza. Another goal 36 seconds later gave the hosts a 4-3 advantage, but Lourdes' defense kept the Panthers off of the scoreboard the rest of the half.
Â
The Panthers took control in the second half, scoring all 10 goals in the period on their way to the victory and advancing to Saturday's championship game.
Â
"The first half was the best half we have played all season, both offensively and defensively," head coach
Paul Sieben said afterwards. "We just couldn't sustain that play in the second half and they took control of the game."
Â
Brooke Knoll led Davenport (11-2) with four goals while Amber Livingston and Jessica Lemcke each scored three times.
Â
Davenport outshot Lourdes 34-18 in the game, including 21-7 in the second half, but
Kiley Ketteman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson H.S.) made 18 stops in the cage for the Gray Wolves. Alex Yates made six saves for the Panthers.
Â
The Panthers held a 44-23 advantage in groundballs and a 14-5 edge in draw controls. Long led Lourdes with five groundballs and five caused turnovers.
Â
The game marked the final contests for seniors Cerveny, Frost, and
Lauren Pelton (Monclova, Ohio/Springfield H.S.). Lourdes set a school record with six victories on the way to a 6-10 record.
