Needing two victories to qualify for the WHAC tournament, Lourdes did just that on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader from Aquinas 1-0 and 15-2 at Fuller Field in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Â
"I am so happy for our seniors and excited were are able to extend our season," head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said afterwards. "We fought the entire season and with the parody in this lead, I think anyone can win the tournament."
Â
Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) tossed a complete game shutout (7-7) in the opener, limiting the Saints to just four hits without walking anyone. She struck out two and did not allow more than one base runner in an inning in the entire contest.
Â
Lourdes tallied its lone run in the sixth as
Hillary West (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) led off the inning with a double. With
Marche' Venable (Youngstown, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney H.S.) running for her,
Taylor Genzman (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) laid down a sacrifice bunt.Â
Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) delivered the only RBI of the game, a single which scored Venable.
Â
Megyesi was the only Gray Wolf with more than one hit off of Mandy Rosol, who limited Lourdes to just six hits in the contest. She fanned six and did not walk anyone in the loss (5-18).
Â
In game two Lourdes scored four times in the opening inning and built an 8-2 lead through five innings before breaking the game open with a seven-run sixth inning.
Â
Kostick earned her second win (8-7) of the day in the circle, allowing just one earned run and five hits in four innings of work.Â
Samantha Shirling (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood H.S.) tossed two scoreless innings of relief.
Â
Jaime Newman (Edgerton, Ohio/Edgerton H.S.) had four hits in game two while
Hayley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) went 3-for-3 with four runs scored. Genzman and
Kayla Encalado (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) each had three hits as well while Megyesi drove home three runs in the win.
Â
Lourdes (14-26, 5-13) will next take part in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament beginning on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. at Pacesetter Park. Official pairings will be announced by the league office in the next few days.
