Defending national champion Auburn Montgomery limited Lourdes to just one hit and took advantage of eight walks and four errors to defeat the Gray Wolves 10-0 on Tuesday evening at the AUM Softball Complex in Montgomery, Ala.
Â
The first seven walks in the game all came around to score, and the Warhawks parlayed the errors into five unearned runs on the evening.
Â
"At this level you have to play your 'A' game every night," head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said afterwards. "You can't allow free bases and they took advantage of every opportunity we gave them."
Â
Following a pair of first inning walks, Kayla Hale delivered a two-run single, one of just six Auburn Montgomery (49-6) hits on the night. Two errors, a walk, and a wild pitch allowed the hosts to score two more runs in the third and the Warhawks increased the lead to 6-0 in the fourth.
Â
A two-out RBI double in the fifth and three more runs in the sixth, two of which were unearned, allowed AUM to earn the six-inning victory.
Â
Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) tallied the lone hit of the game for the Gray Wolves, a triple to left with two outs in the first.
Â
Taylor Powell was in control in the circle, striking out 11 over five innings in the win (31-3). She retired the final 13 hitters she faced before Rachel Ragland tossed a 1-2-3 sixth inning.
Â
"She was solid," Gordon said. We didn't adjust well but that is a credit to her changing speeds and mixing up her locations."
Â
Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) suffered the loss (10-10) in the circle, allowing nine runs, only five of which were earned, and five hits, but walked seven over five innings.
Â
Lourdes (18-29) will now need to battle out of the losers' bracket, beginning with a 4:30 p.m. EDT contest against No. 22 Rio Grande on Tuesday afternoon at the AUM Softball Complex.
Â
"Tomorrow is a new day," Gordon concluded. "We need to continue to focus on the process. Our goal is to send Rio home and extend our season."
