Clare Ciarlino's (Taylor, Mich./Truman H.S.) goal midway through the second half proved to be all the offense Lourdes would need on Tuesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves defeated Mount Vernon Nazarene 1-0 in the season opener at Wildcat Stadium.
Ciarlino, a freshman making her collegiate debut, took advantage of a defensive miscue, and stepped in front of Cougar netminder Ashley Flautt, collected the ball in the box, and found the back of the net with 25:47 remaining in the match.
"I'm really proud of the way our girls dug in this afternoon," head coach
Jackie Donovan said after the match. "We saw some newcomers really step in and make an impact. We still have many things to build upon, but this was a good first result of the season against a quality opponent."
Mount Vernon Nazarene (1-2) outshot Lourdes 12-7 for the match, but each team had five shots on frame, with Flautt making four stops while redshirt freshman
Kiley Transit (Royal Oak, Mich./Royal Oak H.S.) save all five in her debut for the clean sheet.
Ciarlino nearly put Lourdes in front before halftime as
Lexie Cano (Woodhaven, Mich./Riverview H.S.) fed a pass through the Cougar defense that Ciarlino put a solid strike on only to see Flautt make the stop to keep the match scoreless at intermission.
Cano nearly had a goal of her own just prior to Ciarlino's match-winner, but her point-blank shot from the right side was also saved.
Both teams had two corner kick opportunities in the match.
Lourdes (1-0) will conclude its season-opening homestand on Friday afternoon as the Gray Wolves entertain Andrews. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
