Lourdes suffered a pair of setbacks on Monday morning at Hancock Park in Clermont, Fla., dropping a 4-3 decision to Cardinal Stritch before suffering a 13-1 loss to Bellevue.
Â
In the opener against the Wolves, Lourdes jumped in front with a run in the top of the first inning.Â
Taylor Genzman (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) led off with a single, moved to second on a ground out, and scored on
Jimi McNew's (Monroe, Mich./Monroe H.S.) first collegiate hit and RBI.
Â
Cardinal Stritch responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning and added to the lead in the second as Karly Lange homered to center to make it 3-1 Wolves.
Â
The Gray Wolves tied the game in the third.Â
Kayla Encalado (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) tripled to lead off the frame and scored on a RBI hit from
Taylor Tafelski (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.). Tafelski came around and scored two batters later on a double from
Kelsey Beck (Paulding, Ohio/Paulding H.S.).
Â
A two-out error in the bottom of the fourth proved to be the difference in the game as the Wolves plated an unearned run for the game's final tally.
Â
Genzman led Lourdes with three hits in the opener while Encalado and beck both had two hits as part of Lourdes' nine-hit attack.
Â
Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (1-1), allowing three earned runs and eight hits in the complete game effort. The junior walked two and struck out two.
Â
"In game one we did not execute well offensively and it cost us in the end," head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said.
Â
Lexi Kirkpatrick went the distance for Cardinal Stritch (4-0) to earn the win (3-0), walking two and striking out three.
Â
In the second game of the day, Bellevue (10-7) scored a pair of runs in the opening inning and added five more in the second, sending 10 batters to the plate, to build an early 7-0 lead.
Â
The Gray Wolves plated an unearned run for their only tally of the game in the third.Â
Meghan Birr (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores H.S.) led off with a walk, moved to second on a stolen base and scored on an infield hit by Genzman after the throw went down the line.
Â
The Bruins batted around again in the sixth, sending 11 to the plate, while scoring six more runs to close out the game.
Â
Lourdes managed just three hits in the game against Erin Sharpe, who earned the win (1-0) in the circle. She struck out three and walked one while allowing just the one unearned run in the complete game effort.
Â
"Bellevue's pitcher owned us in game two because our offensive approach was horrendous," Gordon added. "We need to trust the process and have quality at bats."
Â
Samantha Shirling (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood H.S.) suffered the loss (0-1), surrendering seven runs, six earned, and six hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Â
"Defensively we need to eliminate the big inning," Gordon concluded. "Once we put all three phases of the game together, we will start to see good results."
Â
Lourdes (1-3) returns to action on Tuesday morning, facing Mount Vernon Nazarene at 8 a.m. and Spring Arbor at 10:30 a.m.
