After holding just a two-goal lead at halftime, Lourdes limited SUNY Delhi to one goal in the second half on Friday morning, and defeated the Broncos 13-6 at Wildcat Stadium.
Â
The eighth-ranked Gray Wolves started slow, trailing SUNY Delhi 2-1 in the final minute of the opening quarter before goals by
D.J. Harris (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg H.S.) and
Jared Yoshino (Toledo, Ohio/Southview H.S.) within 30 seconds of one another put Lourdes in front heading into the second period.
Â
The two goals started a run of five unanswered for Lourdes, as the Gray Wolves built a 6-2 lead following a goal by
Bret Sproul (Chelsea, Maine/Cony H.S.) with 12:05 to play in the second. The Broncos responded with three straight tallies to pull within one before
Dalton Vowles (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) scored with the man advantage to give Lourdes a 7-5 lead at the half.
Â
Neither team could find the back of the cage over the first 13 minutes of the third quarter before
Clay Hall (Great Mills, Md./Saint Mary's Ryken H.S.) started Lourdes in transition, finding
Casey Hilfinger (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) for the goal while recording his first collegiate assist.
Â
"Today the guys really started to use their teammates in the second half and I believe it was a very positive turning point for the entire team," head coach
Patrick Yannarelli said afterwards. "They played hard and for the entire 60 minutes."
Â
Yoshino would add another goal before the end of the quarter and Lourdes scored the first three goals of the fourth to put the game away. SUNY Delhi finally found the back of the net again with 3:08 to play, more than 30 minutes after their most recent tally.
Â
Yoshino finished the game with four goals, tying the school mark for career goals with 169, and two assists while Vowles added three tallies. Harris and Hilfinger both had two-goal games while Sproul and
Drew Gilhooly (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central H.S.) each added a goal.
Â
Lourdes outshot SUNY Delhi (6-4) 35-26 for the game, holding a 26-11 advantage on goal. Rob Pasquele second twice while James McDermott had a goal and two assists.
Â
The Gray Wolves also won the ground ball battle 40-28, with Yoshino collected 11 and
Austin Burger (Monroe, Mich./Saint Mary Catholic Central H.S.) grabbing six more. Burger also won 14 of the 17 faceoffs he took.
Â
