Lourdes withstood a lightning delay and a change in playing surface on Wednesday evening and defeated Lawrence Tech 18-11 in the semifinals of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament.
"Tonight was a hard-fought team victory over a very good Lawrence Tech team," head coach
Patrick Yannarelli said afterwards. "We did the small things well when it counted and we showed a lot of heart and a never quit mentality. We are now looking forward to getting better tomorrow."
Â
The game began outdoors at the LTU Athletic Complex, and Lourdes built a 5-2 lead behind a pair of goals from
Jared Yoshino (Toledo, Ohio/Southview H.S.) and
Drew Gilhooly (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central H.S.).Â
Â
Lightning arrived with 1:30 remaining in the first quarter and, after a delay of more than two-and-a-half hours, was moved indoors to Detroit Country Day School, where the Gray Wolves scored the first two goals of the second period to build a five-goal lead.
Â
The Blue Devils responded with three goals in a 16-second span to pull within two, but Lourdes was able to stop the run, and eventually took a 10-7 lead into halftime.
Â
After Lawrence Tech (10-3) scored the first goal of the third quarter,
Bret Sproul (Chelsea, Maine/Cony H.S.) answered and Gilhooly followed with another tally. Leading 13-10 late in the third, the Gray Wolves struck for five straight goals to put the game away.
Â
Yoshino finished with five goals and an assist while Gilhooly added four goals and a helper.
Dalton Vowles (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) tallied three goals while
Tanner Jaramillo (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) and
D.J. Harris (Miamisburg, Ohio/Miamisburg H.S.) each found the back of the cage twice.Â
Mark O'Bryant (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights H.S.) also had a goal for the Gray Wolves.
Â
Lourdes was outshot by Lawrence Tech 43-37 for the game, but
Conner Mishler (Lambertville, Mich./Bedford H.S.) made 15 saves in the victory.
Â
Tristan Burkhard scored four times to lead Lawrence Tech in the loss.
Â
The Blue Devils also held a 39-32 edge in ground balls for the game, with
