Lourdes turned a 51-19 shot advantage into a 12-3 victory on Saturday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves defeated Union (Ky.) on a cold, blustery afternoon at Wildcat Stadium.
Â
The Lourdes offense started quickly, as
Mark O'Bryant (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights H.S.) scored twice and
Cory Campbell (Dayton, Ohio/Bellbrook H.S.) added another goal in the first 2:45 of the game.
Â
After the early flurry, the Gray Wolf attack was then stymied by the Bulldogs until late in the second quarter. Union scored in the last minute of the opening quarter and against at the 9:46 mark of the second to pull within 3-2.
Â
O'Bryant's third of the game midway through the second pushed the advantage back to two, but Union against responded with a man-up goal with 2:55 to play before halftime.
Â
Lourdes offense then scored three times in a 1:09 span, beginning just eight seconds after the Bulldogs' third goal. Campbell scored first followed by back-to-back tallies from
Greg Johanning (Tivertson, R.I./Tivertson H.S.) to take a 7-3 lead into halftime.
Â
"We had a slow start to today's game, but the guys found their rhythm a little later on and we were able to come together as a team and start playing well," head coach
Patrick Yannarelli said afterwards.
Â
The Gray Wolf defense pitched a shutout over the final 30 minutes. Campbell scored the lone goal of the third quarter, his third of the day, before
Jake Noel (Knoxville, Tenn./William Blount H.S.) added a tally just 11 seconds into the fourth.Â
Drew Gilhooly (Livonia, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central H.S.),
Tanner Jaramillo (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.), and
Collin Miller (Royal Oak, Mich./Shrine Catholic H.S.) all added fourth quarter goals as well.
Â
Jared Huiskens (Bay City, Mich./Central H.S.) made seven saves in goals for the Gray Wolves, playing all but the final two-and-a-half minutes to earn the win.Â
John McInturf (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy H.S.) picked up seven ground balls to lead the defense while Gilhooly had five more as Lourdes finished with a 39-29 edge in that category.
Â
Noel won 9-of-14 faceoffs for the Gray Wolves on the afternoon.
Â
John Senior scored twice to lead Union (0-8) while Anthony Senior had five ground balls.
Â
"We are looking forward to getting back onto the practice field in preparation for conference play," Yannarelli concluded.
