Lourdes scored 18 runs and pounded out 27 hits over two games on Thursday as the Gray Wolves defeated Trinity Christian 7-6 and Midway 11-7 at Sleepy Hollow in Leesburg, Fla.
Â
Despite scoring first in the opener against Trinity Christian, Lourdes needed to rally in the seventh, winning the game with a walk-off single.
Â
"It feels good to get a sweep," head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said afterwards. "We've had a few good battles in the seventh inning and it was great to get a walk-off in game one. That momenentum carried us through game two where we hit the ball well and played better defense."
Â
Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) jump-started the offense in the opening inning with a two-run home run to straightaway center. The Trolls responded with four runs in the second and two in the third, all unearned, taking advantage of five Gray Wolf errors over the two frames.
Â
Trinity Christian took a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the fifth when Kostick singled home
Shylee Schmeltz (Northwood, Ohio/Gibsonburg H.S.). The Gray Wolves trailed 6-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Â
After a Troll error and a double by Kostick, her third hit of the game, Stanton tied the game with a single to right-center. After
Megan Motte's (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay H.S.) bunt moved her to second, Stanton scored on
Brooke Gallaher's (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) game-winning single for her third hit of the game.
Â
Stanton had a two-hit game in the opener as Lourdes tallied 10 total hits.
Â
Kostick went the distance in the circle as well for the win (1-0), allowing eight hits and no earned runs while striking out five. Dara Megyesi suffered the loss (2-4) for Trinity Christian (3-6), giving up the winning unearned run in the seventh.
Â
Midway struck first in game two with a two-run homer in the first before Lourdes bats heated up. Schmeltz cut the lead in half with a RBI double in the second and the Gray Wolves sent 10 batters to the plate in the third, scoring four times. Kostick hit a two-run home run and Stanton went back-to-back with a solo shot.
Â
Run-scoring singles by Gallaher and
Paige Churchfield (Saginaw, Mich./Swan Valley H.S.) in the fourth pushed the lead to 7-2 before the Eagles answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame.
Â
Lourdes struck for three in the fifth, a RBI single by Kostick and a two-run blast by Stanton for her second of the game. Midway responded with three in the bottom of the fifth, but an unearned insurance run in the seventh secured the victory for the Gray Wolves.
Â
Kostick, Stanton, and Churchfield all had three-hit games as part of an 18-hit attack while
Taylor Genzman (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) and Schmeltz each added two hits.
Â
Gallaher earned the win (1-2) in the circle, yielding four runs and nine hits in nine innings. Alyssa Yates suffered the loss (3-3) for Midway (5-7), giving up 10 runs, nine earned, and 17 hits in 4.1 innings for work.
Â
"This is a great start to the second half of our spring break," Gordon concluded.
Â
Lourdes (3-5) will return to Sleepy Hollow on Friday, facing Hannibal-LaGrange at 9 a.m. and Saint Francis (Ind.) at 11:30 a.m.
