A walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh in game one on Monday evening helped lift Lourdes to a doubleheader split against Findlay at Pacesetter Park. The Gray Wolves won the opener 2-1 before falling to the Oilers in the nightcap 13-3.
The opener was a pitcher's duel the entire way. Lourdes took the lead in the third as
Kim Waters (Belleville, Mich./Lincoln H.S.) and
Taylor Genzman (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) delivered the first two hits of the game for the Gray Wolves and
Olivia Stanton (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland H.S.) reached on a walk to load the bases.
Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) drew a two-out free pass to plate Waters with the game's first run.
Kostick kept the Oilers off the scoreboard with her work in the circle until the seventh when Meredith Shepherd delivered a two-out single to tie the game.
Lourdes wasted little time responding in the bottom of the seventh.
Shylee Schmeltz (Northwood, Ohio/Gibsonburg H.S.) reached on a lead-off error and Genzman singled off pitcher Molly Crosby's glove for her second hit of the game. Stanton followed with a hit to left-center, loading the bases and Kostick delivered the RBI single through the left side to give the Gray Wolves their first win ever against Findlay.
Kostick went the distance in the circle for the win (5-1), giving up eight hits but did not walk a batter while striking out seven. Crosby took the loss (2-2) in relief, entering in the game in the sixth inning.
Findlay (16-15) jumped in front quickly in game two, scoring three runs in the first, taking advantage of a pair of Lourdes errors. Two more runs crossed the plate in the second following a pair of walks, giving the Oilers a 5-0 lead.
Lourdes took advantage of three walks in the third inning on the way to scoring three times. Kostick doubled to left-center, scoring a pair of runs and Stanton followed with a RBI single to plate Kostick.
The game remained 5-3 into the fifth when the Oilers erupted for eight runs, sending 12 batters to the plate. Five singles and four walks produced the runs, allowing Findlay to secure the run-rule victory.
The two hits in the third were the lone safeties in the game for the Gray Wolves. Devyn Zuro worked four innings for the victory (1-0), walking six and striking out four.
Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (2-5), allowing 10 runs, eight of which were earned, and five hits while walking eight in 4.1 innings of work.
Lourdes (9-9) will return to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Thursday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves travel to Siena Heights in a game that has been pushed back from Wednesday due to forecasted cold temperatures. Game time for Thursday has yet to be determined.
