Lourdes saw its 2018 softball season come to a close on Saturday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the University of Northwestern Ohio 8-1 and 10-4 at Pacesetter Park.
 
The Racers wasted little time jumping in front in game one, as Joey Bringegar hit a grand slam with one out in the opening inning to give the visitors the lead for good.
 
Lourdes scored its lone run in the bottom of the inning, as Taylor Genzman (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) and Kim Waters (Belleville, Mich./Lincoln H.S.) led off with back-to-back singles.  With two outs, Sydnee Behlmer (Northwood, Ohio/Lake H.S.) delivered a run-scoring base hit to left.
 
UNOH added an unearned run in the second and three more runs in the third, two of which were unearned, pushing the lead to seven. Neither team would cross the plate again after the top of the third, as the two schools combined for just five total hits the rest of the way.
 
Aubrey Brunst earned the win (13-8) in the circle for the Racers, scattering five hits while striking out two and walking just one.  Samantha Shirling (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood H.S.) suffered the loss (4-6), allowing five earned runs and 12 hits in a complete game effort.
 
Waters had the only multi-hit game for the Gray Wolves in the opener.
 
Northwestern Ohio (26-12, 12-8 WHAC) plated a pair of runs in the first inning of game two as well, but again Lourdes responded.  Genzman led off with a single and moved to third on Waters' double before scoring on a wild pitch.  Oliviah Banister (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon H.S.) also delivered a RBI single in the inning, tying the game at two.
 
The Gray Wolves took the lead in the second as Waters singled home Shylee Schmeltz (Northwood, Ohio/Gibsonburg H.S.), who doubled with one out.  Genzman scored one batter later on a throwing error, making it 4-2 Lourdes.
 
The Racers cut the Gray Wolves' lead in half with a run in the third before plating three in the fifth to take the lead for good.  Four unearned runs in the sixth allowed UNOH to add insurance runs, as the Racers took advantage of four walks and an error in the inning.
 
Hunter Conzelmann tossed the complete game victory (12-4) for Northwestern Ohio, allowing 11 hits and three earned runs.  Brooke Gallaher (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (5-10), yielding all 10 runs, only six of which were earned, and seven hits in 5.2 innings of work.  She struck out one and walked six.
 
Genzman and Waters had three hits each to lead Lourdes (15-23, 7-13) attack while Schmeltz also had a pair of hits.
