Lourdes Utilizes Corners to Perfection in Win over Indiana Tech

Lourdes scored three times from corner kick opportunities on Wednesday afternoon on the way to a 3-1 victory over Indiana Tech at a rainy Wildcat Stadium.

Katie Varney (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) set up all three goals, finding the heads of her teammates in the box as the Gray Wolves are off to their best nine-match start in program history.

"I am very proud of the team's performance today," head coach Jackie Phillips said after the match.  "They executed and did exactly what was required of them to earn an important three points."

Maria Schmidt (Rockton, Ill./Boylan Catholic H.S.) started the scoring at the 17:14 mark.  She took Varney's corner that went into the middle of the six and headed it into the back of the net to give Lourdes a 1-0 lead.

The Gray Wolves maintained the 1-0 lead into intermission while outshooting the Warriors 14-6 in the opening half

After five corner kick opportunities in the first half, Lourdes earned another just 3:46 into the second stanza and Varney again delivered.  She found the head of Annah Zacerkowny (Lasalle, Ont./Sandwich H.S.) inside the six for the freshman's first collegiate goal.

Varney and Zacerkowny connected again with 26:01 to play in the match on a nearly carbon copy of the duo's first goal to push the lead to 3-0.

Indiana Tech (4-5, 0-2 WHAC) spoiled the Gray Wolves' shutout bid with just 1:31 to play in the match when Kayla Saffran connected on a penalty kick after the Warriors were fouled in the box while on attack.

Lourdes finished the match with a 23-14 shot advantage, including an 11-7 edge on goal.  The Gray Wolves also earned eight of the 10 corner opportunities in the contest.  Kerstyn Williams (Taylor, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) turned aside six shots in goal for Lourdes while Ally Zenda made seven saves for the Warriors.

Lourdes (6-3, 2-1) will take to the road on Saturday evening as the Gray Wolves travel to Pontiac, Mich. to battle Rochester (Mich.).  Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at Ultimate Soccer Arena.
