No. 3 Northwestern Ohio Ends Lourdes Season in WHAC Quarterfinals

Lourdes saw its 2019 season come to an end on Wednesday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves fell 5-1 to the University of Northwestern Ohio in the quarterfinals of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament held at Racer Stadium in Lima, Ohio.

The nation's third-ranked Racers struck quickly as Brooke Goodrich found Julie Cazanave on a cross in the middle of the box and Northwestern Ohio had the early lead just 31 seconds into the match.

Jeweleen Reuille found Agnes Stefansdottir just over five minutes later to put the hosts in front 2-0.  Cazanave added her second goal of the match in the 17th minute to increase the lead to three, and advantage the Racers would take into halftime.

Northwestern Ohio (17-1), the tournament's top seed, held Lourdes without a shot in the opening 45 minutes, while firing off 18 of its own, eight of which were on net.  Kerstyn Williams (Taylor, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) made five saves for the Gray Wolves in the opening stanza.

Just over four minutes into the second half, Jayla Musselman (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) tallied Lourdes' first show of the match and Cassie Stitt (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman H.S.) followed with one that was turned aside by Racers' netminder Lisa Venrath.

Abigail Mann
(Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) put Lourdes, the eighth seed, on the scoreboard with 27:47 to play, She took a curling  corner kick from Katie Varney (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) and found the back of the goal.  For Mann, it was her team-leading sixth goal of the season.

The Racers added one final insurance goal with 8:30 to play in the contest.  Goodrich slid one across the goal mouth that ricocheted off the inside of the far post and into the net.

Olga Massombo closed out the scoring for Northwestern Ohio, scoring with 2:41 remaining after going one-on-one with Williams.

The Racers finished the match with a 29-4 shot advantage, including a 14-2 edge on net.  Williams finished with nine saves for Lourdes.  The Gray Wolves finished the match with an edge in corner kick opportunities, 5-3.

Lourdes finishes its season 8-10 overall.
