Gray Wolves Win Twice on Final Day in Florida

Lourdes closed its spring trip on Saturday morning in Clermont, Fla. With a 4-3 victory over Missouri Baptist and a 7-1 triumph against Saint Mary (Neb.) at Hancock Park.

Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) won both games for the Gray Wolves in the circle, while going 4-for-5 at the plate with a home run and eight runs batted in on the day.

Missouri Baptist scored an unearned run in the top of the first before Lourdes responded with two in the bottom of the inning.  Kostick doubled home Allie Teeple (Gibsonburg, Ohio/Gibsonburg H.S.) and later scored herself on a single by Kayla Gauthier (Linwood, Mich./Pinconning H.S.).

The Gray Wolves added an unearned run of their own in the bottom of the third as Gauthier's sacrifice fly plated Kostick, who had reached on an error.

Missouri Baptist (6-8) tied the game in the fifth with a pair of runs but again Lourdes answered quickly.  In the bottom of the fifth, Alyssa Ziegler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) led off with a bunt single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a wild pitch.  Kostick then lofted a sac fly to left to put the Gray Wolves back in front.

The Spartans threatened in the sixth, putting a runner at third with just one out, but a comebacker to the circle turned into a double play as the runner tried to score, but was thrown out at the plate following the out at first.

Kostick went the distance in the circle for the win (2-1), scattering five hits while allowing just one earned run.  She walked just one.  Ally Dunaway suffered the loss (3-4) for Missouri Baptist, yielding all four runs, three of which were earned, and six hits in five innings of work.

Lourdes jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead three batters into the game with Saint Mary.  Ziegler led off with a walk and Teeple followed with a single before Kostick launched her second home run of the week to left field.

Kostick doubled home Teeple two innings later to increase the lead to 4-0 before Megan Motte (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay H.S.) added a sacrifice fly in the fifth to push the lead to five.

Saint Mary (4-9) scored its only run on a home run in the bottom of the fifth before the Gray Wolf offense clicked again in the sixth.  Following walks to Ziegler and Teeple, Kostick singled up the middle for the game's final margin.

Kostick finished 3-for-3 at the plate, matching the school record with six runs batted in against the Flames.  Teeple scored three times and had two hits while Olivia Stanton (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland H.S.) added three hits.

In the circle, Kostick scattered just six hits while striking out two in the win (3-1).  Kelsey Goodban suffered the loss (2-2) for Saint Mary, giving up five runs and eight hits in four innings of work.

"With a tough start to the week, I'm really proud of how we battled, put things together, and improved every day we were down here," head coach Jo Ann Gordon said afterwards.  "Winning three of our last four, we will look to take this momentum back home and into conference play."

Lourdes (4-8) will return north to open Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action on Tuesday, March 26, as the Gray Wolves travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to battle the University of Michigan-Dearborn.  First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 5 p.m. at Alumni Field.
