Lourdes closed out the road portion of the 2019 schedule on Friday evening, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Indiana Tech 3-2 and 7-5 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference finale at Warrior Park in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Â
Lourdes tried to put together a late inning rally in the opener, ultimately falling one run short.
Â
Indiana Tech scored single runs in the first, fourth, and fifth innings to build a 3-0 lead before the Gray Wolves rallied in the seventh.Â
Â
Kayla Gauthier (Linwood, Mich./Pinconning H.S.) singled home
Erin Manley (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford H.S.) for Lourdes' first run before
Tiana Card (Brook Park, Ohio/Berea-Midpark H.S.) followed with a pinch-hit RBI single to plate
Alexis Nowowiecki (Saint Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview H.S.), pulling the Gray Wolves within a run. Lourdes moved runners to second and third with two outs, but was unable to drive in the tying run.
Â
Manley had two of the Gray Wolves' six hits in the opener while
Marissa Kostick (Saint Charles, Mich./Saint Charles H.S.) limited the Warriors to five hits in the loss.
Â
In game two it was the Gray Wolves who jumped in front early, scoring four times in the second inning. Lourdes took advantage of three Indiana Tech errors in the frame.Â
Kim Waters (Belleville, Mich./Lincoln H.S.) doubled home
Alyssa Ziegler (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) in addition to the three other unearned tallies.
Â
Indiana Tech (23-22, 11-9 WHAC) answered with six runs in the third, sending 10 batters to the plate in the inning to take the lead. The Warriors had four hits and took advantage of a Gray Wolf error for another unearned run in the frame.
Â
Lourdes cut its deficit in half in the fifth as
Abby Cantrell (Gibsonburg, Ohio/Gibsonburg H.S.) singled home Kostick to make it a 6-5 game. The Gray Wolves continued to threaten, but stranded the bases loaded without tying the game.
Â
The Warriors added a late insurance run in the sixth to close out the scoring.
Â
Kostick had three hits to lead the Gray Wolves seven-hit attack in game two.
Â
Lourdes (6-28, 2-20) will close out the 2019 season on Sunday afternoon, hosting Cardinal Stritch in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch in game one is set for 1 p.m. at Pacesetter Park.
