Fast Start Lifts Lourdes Past Concordia Saturday Afternoon

Eighth-ranked Lourdes scored five times in the opening quarter on Saturday afternoon, on the way to defeating Concordia (Mich.) 10-6 at Wildcat Stadium to move back to the .500 mark in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play.
 
"Today was a good team win for us," head coach Patrick Yannarelli said after the contest.  "The guys are really played hard for each other and we're excited for the stretch run of the season."
 
The Gray Wolves used a balanced offensive attack to build a 5-1 lead after the opening 15 minutes, as five different players found the back of the cage.  Nick Johnson (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.) started the scoring just a minute into the contest and Chad Causley (Clinton Township, Mich./L'Anse Creuse H.S.) followed less than four minutes later.
 
After Concordia cut the Lourdes lead to 2-1, Blake Alexander (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights H.S.) responded eight seconds later to push the advantage back to two.  Cory Campbell (Dayton, Ohio/Bellbrook H.S.) and Drew Gilhooly (Livonia ,Mich./Detroit Catholic Central H.S.) added tallies before the quarter expired to, making it 5-1 Gray Wolves.
 
Concordia (2-7, 0-4 WHAC) scored three times in the second quarter, but Alexander added a pair of his own to give the hosts a 7-4 lead at the break.
 
The Cardinals pulled within one with a pair of goals in the third, but Alexander's second of the game gave the Gray Wolves a two-goal edge heading into the fourth.  Johnson scored again early the final stanza before Causley closed out the scoring with an insurance goal with 2:07 to play.
 
Tyler Hart (Brighton, Mich./Brighton H.S.) came up big in goal for Lourdes, making 14 saves as Concordia held a 42-35 total shot advantage for the game.  Jake Noel (Knoxville, Tenn./William Blount H.S.) won 9-of-12 faceoffs in the game, and Lourdes lost just once at the X in the second half.  Noel also tallied nine ground balls.
 
Mikey Vanvleet and Oliver Niedzwiecki each had two goals and an assist to pace Concordia's offense while Austin Kelly made seven saves in goal.
 
Lourdes (6-3, 2-2) takes to the road for its next two games, beginning on Wednesday evening with a trip to Adrian, Mich. to face Siena Heights.  The opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at O'Loughlin Stadium.
