Two teams that relied upon their defense all season long put on an offensive display on Wednesday evening in the quarterfinals of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament with Siena Heights putting an end to Lourdes best season in program history with a 4-2 victory at O'Laughlin Stadium in Adrian, Mich.
Â
"It was an unbelievable season that this group of girls had," head coach
Jackie Phillips said afterwards. "The senior have done an amazing job advancing the program forward throughout their careers."
Â
Entering the match, Lourdes had allowed just 15 goals in 18 matches on the season while the Saints had yielded just nine goals in their 18 contests.
Â
Siena Heights (13-4-2), the tournament's fourth seed, would strike first midway through the opening half as Sarah Ammon headed in a cross from Kennedy Hyde to put the Saints on top.
Â
The Gray Wolves would respond just over six minutes later.Â
McKenzie Klingensmith (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls H.S.) grabbed an attempted clear by Siena Heights and fired it past goalkeeper Kara Bishop into the left side of the goal to knot the match at one with 15:06 to play before halftime. For the sophomore Klingensmith, the goal was the first of the season.
Â
The match would remain deadlocked 1-1 into intermission despite the Saints holding a 16-2 shot advantage in the opening 45 minutes.Â
Emmy Rodger (Romeo, Mich./Romeo H.S.) made four first half saves for the Gray Wolves.
Â
With 31:37 to play in the second half, Marissa Young put Siena Heights in front again, scoring an unassisted goal. Allie Balasico made it 3-1 Saints just 1:54 later. Following a scramble in the box, she was able to tip the ball into the right corner of the goal.
Â
Lourdes continued to battle though.Â
Abigail Mann (Toledo, Ohio/Southview H.S.) sent a cross through the box where
Chloe Shaffer (Toledo, Ohio/Rossford H.S.) converted at the far post with 20:37 to play as the Gray Wolves pulled back within one. For Shaffer, the goal was her eighth of the season, setting a new single season record for Lourdes.
Â
The Saints would add an insurance tally just under five minutes later as Kaleigh Mahaz scored directly from the corner for the night's final goal.
Â
Siena Heights finished the match with a 26-4 shot advantage and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks. Rodger made five more saves in the second half to finish with nine for the night, keeping the Gray Wolves close throughout.
