The Lourdes men's lacrosse team saw its 2021 season come to an end on Thursday morning as the ninth-ranked Gray Wolves fell 17-8 to No. 1 Reinhardt in the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Invitational held at Memorial Stadium in Savannah, Ga.
"The guys worked hard all day but came up short," head coach
Patrick Yannarelli said afterwards. "We're grateful and proud of the boys and getting to experience the national tournament will push us to get better over the summer."
Cory Campbell (Dayton, Ohio/Bellbrook H.S.) scored three times and added an assist while
Tyler Pezzot (Beavercreek, Ohio/Beavercreek H.S.) found the back of the cage twice and added a helper for the Gray Wolves. However, Gavin Banks tallied six goals and Kyle Banks added four more for the Eagles as the three-time defending national champions extended their winning streak to 34 consecutive games.
Reinhardt (15-0) started quickly, scoring four times in the game's first six minutes. Pezzot put the Gray Wolves on the scoreboard with 7:06 to play in the opening quarter before adding another goal four minutes later.
Chad Causley (Clinton Township, Mich./L'Anse Creuse H.S.) added a goal with a minute to play in the first period to pull Lourdes within one but the Eagles answered with just 13 seconds to play to take a 5-3 lead after 15 minutes.
Reinhardt extended its run with the first five goals of the second quarter to build a seven-goal lead before Campbell added a goal late in the half to make it 10-4 Eagles at the half.
After the Eagles scored the opening goal of the second half,
Nick Johnson (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg H.S.) and
Nate Allan (Peterborough, Ont./Saint Peters Catholic H.S.) scored back-to-back goals to get Lourdes within five, but that would be as close as the Gray Wolves would get the rest of the way. Two goals to end the third by Reinhardt put the Eagles in front 13-6 heading into the final 15 minutes.
Lourdes (7-6) tried to rally in the fourth as Campbell scored just 12 seconds into the stanza, but Reinhardt ended the Gray Wolves' hopes of a comeback with four straight goals. Campbell added one final tally with just 1:21 to play for the game's final margin.
Reinhardt outshot Lourdes 41-36 for the game, with
Tyler Queen (Odenton, Md./Arundel H.S.) making eight saves in the cage for the Gray Wolves. Matt Webb made 14 stops between the posts for the Eagles.
The Eagles finished with a slim 19-16 ground ball advantage, with
Zach Stahura (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater H.S.) and Allan each registering six for the Gray Wolves.
Reinhardt (15-0) advances to Friday's semifinals where the Eagles will face Keiser.
