Lourdes Earns Sunday Split with Calumet

Ashleigh Riffle (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon H.S.) tied a Lourdes single game record with six runs batted in, including a grand slam, in the opener on Sunday as the Gray Wolves split with Calumet winning 10-5 before falling 2-0 at Gray Wolf Field.

"We had a solid performance all-around today," head coach Caitlin Blanchard said afterwards.  "Our defense and pitching kept us in the games.  The first game was a great team win, with a lot of people contributing."

After surrendering a run in the opening inning of game one, Lourdes took the lead in the second.  Riffle reached on a fielder's choice to tie the game before Emily Wallace (Thornville, Ohio/Lakewood H.S.) followed with a RBI hit to put the Gray Wolves in front.

Calumet regained the lead in the third, scoring four times, including a three-run home run by Adelina Staden before Kirsten Smith (Marysville, Mich./Marysville H.S.) kept the Crimson Wave off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Lourdes batted around in the third, taking the lead for good while plating six runs.  Megan Richardson (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) singled to right to score a pair before Riffle lined a grand slam to right for her first hit of the season and first career home run.

Riffle added another RBI single in the fifth to make it 9-5 Lourdes before Sophia Dauterman (Toledo, Ohio/Whiteford H.S.) grounded out in the sixth to bring home the game's final run.

"I was so happy for Ashleigh Riffle," Blanchard added.  "She's our only senior and she had been talking all year about how she had yet to hit a home run in college, so for her to come through with the grand slam in game one and give us the win was just an incredible moment."

The Gray Wolves had nine hits in the opener, including three by Brooke Albert (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights H.S.) and two from Riffle.

Smith went the distance in the circle to earn the win (3-3), striking out five while yielding 11 hits and four walks along with the five runs.

The Crimson Wave's Josselline Monge stymied the Lourdes bats in game two, allowing just five hits while fanning four in the complete game shutout.

The game was scoreless until the sixth when back-to-back two-out hits produced the only two runs of the game for Calumet (6-10).

Milena Applegate (Jerome, Mich./Lumen Christi H.S.) tossed a complete game for Lourdes, scattering eight hits while striking out four in the loss (1-3).

"Milena pitched a great game two, but unfortunately we couldn't push the runs across to get the win," Blanchard concluded.

Lourdes (4-7) continues its homestand on Tuesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves entertain Malone.  First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m.
