Lourdes played its final non-conference doubleheader of the season on Wednesday afternoon at Gray Wolf Field, dropping game one to Ohio Christian 13-5 before bouncing back with an 8-0 victory in game two.
The Trailblazers scored a pair of runs in the opening inning of game one, only to see the Gray Wolves answer in the bottom of the frame.
Emily Wallace (Thornville, Ohio/Lakewood H.S.) and
Sophia Dauterman (Toledo, Ohio/Whiteford H.S.) both delivered run-scoring singles to even the game at two.
Ohio Christian broke the game open with four runs in the second and five more in the third, homering in both innings. After the Trailblazers tacked on solo runs in both the fourth and fifth to push the lead to 13-2, Lourdes tried to rally in the bottom of the fifth with two outs.
Megan Richardson (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) hit a solo home run, her team-leading third of the year. After Wallace reached on an error,
Brooke Albert (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights H.S.) singled to center and came around to score, as did Wallace, when the ball went by the outfielder all the way to the fence. Lourdes could not come up with a final run to extend the game though.
Dauterman had the only multi-hit game for the Gray Wolves in the opener, going 2-for-3, as the team managed just six hits.
In game two,
Kirsten Smith (Marysville, Mich./Marysville H.S.) tossed her first collegiate shutout, going the distance. She struck out seven, walked just two, and allowed Ohio Christian (17-17) to manage just four hits in the win (8-6).
Richardson's RBI double in the first put Lourdes in front for good.
Elizabeth Chagolla (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) drew a bases loaded walk in the second and Richardson drove home two with a sacrifice fly to center in the second inning. Albert followed with her second of four hits in the game to make it 5-0 Gray Wolves.
The Gray Wolves closed the game out in the sixth.
Jaecy Jones (Clinton, Mich./Clinton H.S.) had a pinch-hit run-scoring single down the right field line and Wallace drove in another. Albert then ended the game with a hit up the middle.
Lourdes (12-15) returns to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Thursday afternoon, hosting the University of Northwestern Ohio. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at Gray Wolf Field.
