Facing the first of two consecutive nationally-ranked opponents on the road, Lourdes dropped both ends of a doubleheader from 20
th-ranked Madonna on Sunday, falling 8-0 and 7-1 at University Field in Livonia, Mich.
Â
The Crusaders scored two in the first before adding five more in the second of game one to take the early lead. A single run in the third allowed Madonna to take an eight-run advantage. Lourdes was not able to crack the scoreboard, with the game ending after five innings.
Â
Madonna starter Maeson Schlaud carried a perfect game into the fifth when
Brooke Albert (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights H.S.) led off the inning with a single to break up the no-hitter as well. That would be the Gray Wolves lone hit in the opener.
Â
The Crusaders plated a pair of run in the opening inning of game two as well, but this time Lourdes answered. In the third,
Abby Cantrell (Gibsonburg, Ohio/Gibsonburg H.S.) led off with a single. Pinch-runner
Madie Wagner (Sycamore, Ohio/Wynford H.S.) took second on a wild pitch and scored on Albert's one-out double.
Â
Madonna (26-4, 15-3 WHAC) scored four times in the fourth and tacked on one final run in the sixth while keeping Lourdes off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
Â
The Gray Wolves tallied six hits in the nightcap.
Â
"We didn't play quality softball today," head coach
Caitlin Blanchard said afterwards. "Our pitching staff gave up a lot of free bases and our defense gave Madonna a lot of extra opportunities. We're also having trouble right now making the routine plays. We had a couple of bright spots today though.Â
Brooke Albert got a big hit in game one to break up the perfect game and then followed it up with an RBI double early in the second game. The other highlight was
Sam Stimmel (Macomb, Mich./L'anse Creuse North H.S.) coming in and getting a pitch hit in her first at bat of the year. She's been out for awhile due to injury and it was awesome to see her hard work pay off and for her to get the moment to come in and get a hit for the team."
Â
Lourdes (13-20, 7-11) heads to 14
th-ranked Aquinas on Tuesday for a pair of games. Action begins at 3 p.m. at Gainey Athletic Facility in Grand Rapids, Mich.
