Lourdes wrapped up the 2022 regular season on Friday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader with Cornerstone. The Golden Eagles took the opener 3-1 before the Gray Wolves bounced back with a 7-2 victory in game two at the Cornerstone Softball Field in Grand Rapids, Mich.
The opener was a pitcher's dual into the fourth when Cornerstone broke a scoreless tie with a wind-blown triple followed by a single up the middle.
Kat Johnson retired the first 14 Gray Wolves in order until
Abby Cantrell (Gibsonburg, Ohio/Gibsonburg H.S.) and
Ashleigh Riffle (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon H.S.) registered back-to-back two-out singles in the fifth, but were left stranded.
The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, one unearned, before Lourdes broke through in the sixth.
Megan Richardson (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) doubled with two outs and
Emily Wallace (Thornville, Ohio/Lakewood H.S.) followed with a RBI two-bagger, putting the Gray Wolves on the scoreboard.
Lourdes brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but was unable to convert as Johnson went the distance in the circle for the win (6-7) for the Golden Eagles, striking out sixth while allowing six hits and no walks.
Kirsten Smith (Marysville, Mich./Marysville H.S.) started and took the loss (8-11) for Lourdes, working 4.2 innings. She allowed three runs, two of which were earned, and six hits while fanning four.
The Golden Eagles scored first in game two with a two-out run in the bottom of the second. Lourdes responded in the third, plating seven runs as 12 batters went to the plate in the inning.
Brooke Albert (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights H.S.) doubled home the first run, tying the game before Richardson followed with a flyball to left that was dropped, scoring two. Wallace added a RBI single up the middle to make it 4-1 Gray Wolves. Cantrell followed with another RBI base hit before Riffle grounded into a fielder's choice, but beat the return throw to first and two runners scored, making it a 7-1 Gray Wolf lead.
Cornerstone (16-18-1, 11-11 WHAC) scored a run in the fifth with a two-out double, but that would be the last tally of the game for the Golden Eagles.
Ashley Roth (LaRue, Ohio/Elgin H.S.) earned the win (3-5) in the circle, tossing 4.2 innings allowing just two runs on five hits. She stuck out four before
Milena Applegate (Jerome, Mich./Lumen Christi H.S.) came on in relief, pitching 2.1 innings of scoreless softball, allowing just one hit.
Albert went 3-for-4 in game two with a pair of doubles while Wallace and
Maddy Bartos (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) each had two hits as part of a 11-hit attack.
Lourdes (15-22, 9-13) will have to wait until the regular season is complete on Sunday to find out whether the Gray Wolves will qualify for next week's Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament.
