Lourdes Opens Mid-South Action with Two Home Duals

Lourdes began Mid-South Conference action on Friday evening with all five Gray Wolves in action picking up at least one individual win, but the team fell to eighth-ranked University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) 30-15 and Siena Heights 27-16 inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
 
"I am super proud of how the girls responded after the long holiday break," head coach Louis Piszker said afterwards.  "We came out and wrestled extremely well against two very tough conference teams.  We saw a lot of great things today and will use next week to clean some things up before heading to Campbellsville."
 
In the opener against the Patriots, Cumberlands (8-8, 1-1 MSC) won the first two bouts via forfeit before the Gray Wolves scored four straight victories.  Stefana Jelacic (Mesa, Ariz./Chandler H.S.) picked up her first pin of the season at 116 pounds with 19 seconds remaining in the opening period.  Maria Hoffman (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview H.S.) followed with a come-from-behind 12-10 decision at 123 pounds for her third win of the year.
 
Brielle Newland (Reedsville, Ohio/Eastern H.S.) picked up her second tech fall of the season at 130 pounds, scoring a 10-0 triumph before Julia Padilla (Covina, Calif./Northview H.S.) notched her third consecutive win with an 8-0 decision at 136 pounds.
 
Cumberlands took the final four bouts though to rally for the win, three via forfeit and one by tech fall.
 
In the nightcap against Siena Heights (12-6, 1-1), Jelacic, ranked ninth in the NAIA, started the match off with a pin 30 seconds into her contest at 109 pounds against Valeria Ahumada of the Saints, who entered ranked 13th nationally.  The teams then traded forfeit wins, with Hoffman picking up the triumph for Lourdes at 123 pounds. 
 
Siena Heights (scored wins at 136 by decision and 143 by forfeit before Payton Curley (Dover, Ohio/Dover H.S.) notched her team-leading fifth win of the year with her fourth pin, at the 2:26 mark of her 155-pound bout.
 
The Saints concluded the match with forfeit wins at 170 and 191 pounds.
 
Lourdes (1-3, 0-2 MSC) will have 11 days off before returning to the match on Jan. 24 as the Gray Wolves travel to Campbellsville, Ky. to battle fourth-ranked Campbellsville.  The opening bout is slated for 5 p.m. inside Gosser Gymnasium.
