Final Results

Lourdes opened its 2023-2024 season in triumphant fashion on Wednesday evening, defeating John Carroll 31-13 inside the DeCarlo Varsity Center in University Heights, Ohio.
 
"I am super proud of how all the girls competed tonight," head coach Louis Piszker said afterwards.  "Our young girls responded well to a very hostile environment and our veterans took care of business.  If we can continue to improve upon the small details and grow every match, we are going to be solid down the final stretch of the season.  Coach Sugey did a great job preparing the girls for tonight."
 
The Gray Wolves jumped out to an early 9-0 lead as Shanna Morris (Marion, Ohio/Harding H.S.) won via forfeit at 101 pounds before Stefana Jelacic (Mesa, Ariz./Chandler H.S.) registered a 13-0 tech fall at 109 pounds.
 
After John Carroll (0-1) scored a pair of falls at 116 and 123, Lourdes retook the lead for good as Kelcey Dew (Sunbury, Ohio/Hayes H.S.) was awarded a forfeit at 130.
 
Lourdes picked up back-to-back falls to take control of the match.  Katrina Cortez (Corona, Calif./Corona H.S.) needed just 45 seconds to pin her opponent in her collegiate debut at 136 pounds while Desiree Vazquez (Covina, Calif./Northview H.S.) recorded a fall at the 2:28 mark in her first college match at 143.
 
The Blue Streaks picked up a decision at 155 before Lourdes won both of the final two bouts to close out the match.  Payton Curley (Dover, Ohio/Dover H.S.) scored a 9-0 decision in the 170-pound weight class before Alysse Phillips (Los Angeles, Calif./Keppel H.S.) closed out the night with a 10-0 tech fall at 191 pounds.
 
Lourdes (1-0) will return to the mat on Nov. 12 as the Gray Wolves take part in the Adrian Invitational.  Action begins at 10 a.m. inside the Merillat Sports & Fitness Center in Adrian, Mich.
