Lourdes took to the mat on Friday for day one of the Patriot Duals, facing a pair of ranked opponents in its three bouts inside the UC Volleyball Gym in Williamsburg, Ky.
The Gray Wolves opened dropping a 33-11 decision to top-ranked Life before being edged 25-22 against Mount Olive. Lourdes closed the day dropping a 27-20 match to 10
th-ranked Indiana Tech.
"Today was a tough day of wrestling against a lot of quality teams," head coach
Louis Piszker said afterwards. "We had a couple of girls wrestle extremely well and this was a great learning experience for our younger girls. We will have a short memory and comeback tomorrow looking to end the semester strong."
In the first match against Life,
Stefana Jelacic (Mesa, Ariz./Chandler H.S.), who went 3-0 on the day, opened with a 10-0 tech fall at 101 pounds.
Desiree Vazquez (Covina, Calif./Northview H.S.) added a fall just 1:17 into her 136-pound weight class for the Gray Wolves' other victory in the match.
Kelcey Dew (Sunbury, Ohio/Hayes H.S.) at 130 was edged in a tight 12-10 decision while
Allie Phillips (Los Angeles, Calif./Keppel HS.) lost a tie 3-1 decision at 191 pounds.
Lourdes started quick against Mount Olive as
Shanna Morris (Marion, Ohio/Harding H.S.) picked up an 11-0 tech fall at 101 pounds while Jelacic moved up a weight class and added a tech fall of her own at 109 by the same score. Dew earned a 12-1 tech fall at 130 pounds before
Payton Curley (Dover, Ohio/Dover H.S.) and Phillips closed the match with back-to-back pins, both in the first period.
In the final match against Indiana Tech, Morris again opened with a 10-0 tech fall before Jelacic pinned her opponent in just 1:49. Vazquez registered her second fall of the day late in the first period at 136 pounds while Phillips was awarded a victory via forfeit at 191.
Lourdes (1-3) will return to the mat on Saturday morning for day two of the Patriot Dual. Action begins at 10 a.m. and the Gray Wolves are tentatively scheduled to face Lincoln Memorial, Saint Andrew, and Liberty.
