Lourdes wrapped up its trip to the USSSA Space Coast in Melbourne, Fla. on Saturday morning, falling to 23
rd-ranked Marian 9-3 before dropping a 3-2 decision to Florida National.
Â
"We could not put a complete game together today," head coach
Caitlin Blanchard said afterwards. "We had a few good innings here or there, but not enough to win."
Â
In the opener against the Knights, Marian (10-1) jumped in front with a pair of runs in the first before capitalizing on three Gray Wolf errors in the second that led to four runs.
Â
Lourdes got on the scoreboard in the third as
Elizabeth Valdez's (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) fielder's choice plated
Abby Cantrell (Gibsonburg, Ohio/Gibsonburg H.S.), who led off the inning with a single. The Gray Wolves added two more in the third as
Maddie Darrah (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) slid home on a passed ball. A
Brooke Albert (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights H.S.) sacrifice fly then plated
Megan Richardson (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon H.S.) to make it a 6-3 game.
Â
Marian added three more runs in the sixth on a pair of doubles to put the game out of reach.
Â
Annalisse Palma (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview H.S.) went 3-for-3 in the opener to lead Lourdes' seven-hit attack.Â
Milena Applegate (Jerome, Mich./Lumen Christi H.S.) pitched 5.2 innings of relief, allowing just three runs while striking out five.
Â
Florida National (12-7) did all of its damage in the second inning of game two, scoring three times, one of which was unearned, to take the early lead.
Â
The Gray Wolves answered with two in the sixth.Â
Olivia Hickman (Trenton, Mich./Trenton H.S.) singled home Palma, who reached on a bunt single, for the team's first run. Darrah then followed with a RBI double to left to pull Lourdes within a run. The Gray Wolves would not be able to find the equalizer down the stretch though.
Â
Darrah went 3-for-3 in game two as Lourdes had six hits.
Â
Berlynn Keller (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford H.S.) went the distance in the circle, striking out three without walking anyone. She scattered eight hits, and only four outside the second inning.
Â
Lourdes (5-9) will return north to host Malone on Wednesday afternoon in doubleheader action at Gray Wolf Field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
