Lourdes Defeats Fisher, Falls to No. 23 Marian in Thursday Softball

Lourdes picked up another softball split on Thursday morning at the USSSA Space Coast in Melbourne, Fla., downing Fisher 14-0 before falling to 23rd-ranked Marian 8-0.

"In game one we did what we needed to do and the win," head coach Caitlin Blanchard said afterwards.  "Milena (Applegate) took care of business in the circle and we got on base and scored early.  The stats tell the story in game two.  You can't have five walks and four errors and expect to beat teams, especially those that are nationally ranked.  Five unearned runs are too many in any game."

In the opener against Fisher (0-7), Lourdes took advantage of 16 Falcon walks on the morning.

The first seven batters of the game for the Gray Wolves drew base on balls and Elizabeth Valdez (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.) delivered a RBI single as Lourdes scored five times in the opening inning.  Lourdes plated another run in the second on a hit by Abigail Sparks (Dundee, Mich./Summerfield H.S.) and tacked on three more in the third, including a two-run double by Maddy Bartos (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.). Lourdes took advantage of five more free passes in the fourth inning as well as three wild pitches to score five more times.

Valdez had two of the Gray Wolves' five hits in the opener while Bartos drove home four runs and Sparks added three more RBI.

In the circle, Milena Applegate (Jerome, Mich./Lumen Christi H.S.) went the distance, striking out six while scattering just three hits for the shutout.

Against Marian (6-1), four errors in the second inning led five unearned runs as the Knights took the early lead.  After the second, Berlynn Keller (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford H.S.) shut Marian down until the seventh, when the Knights scored three times, two on a bases clearing triple.

Keller finished went the distance, allowing just three earned runs and nine hits while striking out five.

Olivia Hickman (Trenton, Mich./Trenton H.S.) led the Gray Wolf offense in game two, going 2-for-3, as Lourdes finished the afternoon with five hits.

Lourdes (4-6) returns to the diamond in Melbourne on Friday afternoon for two more games.  The Gray Wolves will battle Saint Mary (Kan.) at 2 p.m. and Culver-Stockton at 4:30 p.m. at USSSA Space Coast.
