Brooke Albert's (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights H.S.) two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh of game one lifted Lourdes to a 2-1 victory over Madonna on Wednesday afternoon before the Crusaders took game two of the doubleheader 8-0 at Pacesetter Park.
The opener was a pitcher's dual with both starters going the distance.
Berlynn Keller (Ottawa Lake, Mich./Whiteford H.S.) finished the complete game win (5-12) allowing just one run on five hits while striking out two and walking three. Maeson Schlaud took the loss (19-4) for the Crusaders, allowing two runs, one earned, and seven hits while striking out 12.
The game was scoreless until the sixth when a back-to-back one-out singles followed by a fielder's choice plated Madonna's lone run.
The Gray Wolves finally broke through in the seventh.
Vivianna Gonzalez (Brownstown, Mich./Cabrini H.S.) and
Emily Wallace (Thornville, Ohio/Lakewood H.S.) both tallied back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. A passed ball moved the runners to second and third before Albert singled to the gap in left-center with two outs to give Lourdes the walk-off win. Gonzalez and Wallace both had two hits for the Gray Wolves.
In game two, Madonna (32-21, 15-7 WHAC) batted around in the second, scoring five times, before adding two more runs in the third. A single run in the fourth was all the Crusaders would need in the shutout win.
Lourdes (11-27, 6-16) never managed more than one runner on base in an inning in game two.
Abby Cantrell (Gibsonburg, Ohio/Gibsonburg H.S.) went 2-for-2 at the plate, as the Gray Wolves managed just four in the nightcap.
