Trailing by one at halftime, Lourdes erupted for 10 second half goals on Tuesday afternoon to come from behind and defeat Missouri Baptist 12-6 at Ottawa Hills High School.
Missouri Baptist struck first before
Garrett Boersma (Norco, Calif./Norco H.S.) evened the game at one with 4:21 to play in the opening quarter as the two schools accounted for just two total first quarter tallies.
The Spartans retook the lead early in the second before Boersma again knotted the score with his second goal of the day midway through the period. Missouri Baptist would find the back of the cage one more time before halftime, scoring the goal ahead goal with just 32 seconds left to take a 3-2 lead into intermission.
Caden Louthan (Dripping Springs, Texas/Dripping Springs H.S.) got the Gray Wolf offense started in the second half, scoring a pair of goals before
Kalani Hale (Charleston, W. Va./Capital H.S.) added another to put Lourdes in front 6-3 after 45 minutes.
Lourdes extended its run to 8-0, scoring the first five goals of the fourth quarter in just over eight minutes.
Jake Busta (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad H.S.) started the scoring in the stanza before
Gavin Conley (Hanover, Ohio/Licking Valley H.S.) added another tally.
Dique Reid (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East H.S.) won back-to-back faceoffs after Conley's tally and found Hale for a pair of goals as the Gray Wolves scored three times in an 18-second span, pushing the lead to 10-3.
Busta would add his third goal of the game and Hale his fourth down the stretch as Lourdes secured the victory.
The Gray Wolves finished with a 43-27 shot advantage, as Spartan goalkeeper Ashton Scott made 17 saves to keep Missouri Baptist (0-7) in the game.
Xander Slate (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's H.S.) made five saves for Lourdes between the posts.
Reid won 16-of-19 faceoffs in the game and picked up 13 ground balls while
Tyler Paul (Sunbury, Ohio/Big Walnut H.S.) caused three turnovers.
Lourdes (3-1) will have 11 days off before Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play opens next Saturday, March 23, as the Gray Wolves host Aquinas. The opening faceoff is set for 11 a.m. at Timberstone Junior High School.
