Lourdes began Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Monday afternoon, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Cornerstone 9-1 and 8-0 at the Cornerstone Softball Field in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Â
The Gray Wolves scored first in the opener as
Brooke Albert (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights H.S.) led off the third inning with a double and scored one batter later on an
Emily Wallace (Thornville, Ohio/Lakewood H.S.) double. That would be the lone run of the day for Lourdes though.
Â
Cornerstone answered quickly with two runs in the bottom of the frame before adding four more in the fourth. The Golden Eagles then closed out the game with three runs in the fifth.
Â
Albert went 3-for-3 with two two-baggers in the opener, accounting for half of the Gray Wolves' hits.
Â
In game two, Cornerstone (13-9, 2-0 WHAC) took the lead with a run in the second and added three more in the third. The Golden Eagles plated four in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.
Â
Lourdes managed just three hits in game two, including a double by Albert for the lone extra base hit.
Â
Lourdes (6-16, 0-2) will return to the Cornerstone Softball Field on Friday as the Gray Wolves face Aquinas. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
