SYLVANIA, Ohio – Four different goal scorers found the back of the net as Lourdes University women's soccer rolled to a 4-0 win over Defiance College on Wednesday night at Wildcat Stadium.
The Gray Wolves controlled the match from the opening whistle, outshooting the Yellow Jackets 65-0 and earning 16 corner kicks.
Cecily Hughes opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a strike from distance that ricocheted off the post and in to make it 1-0.
After dominating possession throughout the first half, Lourdes broke the match open after the break.
Maisy Gerlach doubled the lead in the 69th minute off an assist from
Payton Childers, who then added a goal of her own less than two minutes later on a setup from
Zoey Trout.
Jaylyn Thornton capped the scoring in the 73rd minute with her fourth goal of the season.
Samarah Arendsen and
Addison Beil combined for the shutout, as neither goalkeeper was called upon to make a save. Defiance keeper Hannah Redick finished with 22 saves in a busy outing for the visitors.
With the win, Lourdes improved to 9-2 overall and 7-1 in WHAC play, posting its seventh shutout of the season and third straight home victory. The team is now tied for 2nd all-time with seven shutouts on the season.
The Gray Wolves continue conference action on Saturday, Oct. 18, when they travel to face Madonna in Livonia, Mich.
