ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (LourdesAthletics.com) -- The
Lourdes University softball team wrapped up its regular season on a high note Saturday afternoon, sweeping a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader against Rochester Christian University in Rochester Hills, Mich. The Gray Wolves earned a 5-1 victory in the opener before completing the sweep with a 7-3 win in game two, finishing the day with strong performances.
Game One: Lourdes 5, Rochester Christian 1
Lourdes used a late offensive surge and a complete-game effort in the circle to earn a 5-1 victory over Rochester Christian in game one of the Saturday doubleheader.
Trailing 1-0 heading into the sixth, the Gray Wolves plated four runs in the inning—highlighted by back-to-back RBI doubles from
Jessyca Smith and
Taylor Leggins—to take control. Additionally, Lourdes added an insurance run in the seventh, capitalizing on a Rochester Christian error.
Mallori Bradley tossed a three-hit complete game with two strikeouts and no walks to improve to 4-7 on the season, helping Lourdes move to 9-23 overall.
Game Two: Lourdes 7, Rochester Christian 3
Lourdes struck early and added key insurance runs late to complete a Saturday sweep, defeating Rochester Christian, 7-3 in game two.
The Gray Wolves took immediate control with a five-run first inning, capitalizing on defensive miscues by the Warriors and timely hitting. Jessyca Smith opened the scoring with an RBI single that turned into two bases on a left field error, and Karlei Conard followed with a two-run single to cap the early outburst.
Rochester Christian responded in the third with a three-run frame of their own, narrowing the gap to 5-3.
Lourdes added insurance in the sixth when Liv Hussar drove in Alyssa Goretzka with a groundout. In the seventh, Brooke Albert delivered an RBI double to extend the lead to 7-3.
Goretzka led Lourdes at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance and two doubles, while Conard added two RBIs and earned the win in the circle, tossing two scoreless innings. Kirsten Smith pitched five innings in relief, allowing just one earned run while striking out four.
Albert, Smith, and Taylor Leggins each added hits in a nine-hit offensive effort, while the Gray Wolves also stole two bases and turned a double play defensively.
