GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Lourdes softball team (8-13, 5-7 in WHAC) fell twice to Cornerstone (21-14, 12-6 in WHAC) in a road doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
Both games came down to the wire with Lourdes losing 0-2 during the first and 2-5 during the second. Lourdes remains in the last spot for the WHAC tournament with the pair of losses. On the other hand, Cornerstone stays in third place in the WHAC, one game behind Indiana Tech.
Game #1: L, 0-2
The Gray Wolves got shutout for the first time all season in game one against the Golden Eagles, mustering four hits of offense against Cornerstone's ace, Addi Herbig.
On the mound for Lourdes was
Cassi Kieper. She threw another complete game, with just seven hits allowed and two earned runs. Kieper also regularly sent the Golden Eagles straight to the bench with eight strikeouts in the contest.
Lourdes had an early opportunity to score with
Ava Auler doubling in the first inning.
Taylor Leggins subsequently grounded out to advance Auler to third base. However, Auler was stalled at third after a
Skylar Mitchell fly out.
Cornerstone scored their first run in the bottom of the third on an Anna Griffioen solo home run. Lourdes attempted to strike back in the top of the fourth but came up just short.
Taylor Leggins started off the fourth with a leadoff single.
Skylar Mitchell proceeded to walk and
Olivia Rompf singled to load the bases.
Although there were bases loaded and no outs, Addi Herbig got the next two Lourdes batters to strikeout and
Maddie Darrah to end the inning in a fly out.
Cornerstone ended the scoring in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double by Alayna Meade. The 2-0 lead was enough for Herbig to get the win for the Golden Eagles.
Game #2: L, 2-5
Lourdes lost another close game to Cornerstone in the late afternoon. Lourdes senior
Mallori Bradley was credited with the loss, going 1.2 innings with four runs allowed, two of which were earned.
The Golden Eagles started off the scoring with a four-run second inning. Rylee Stephenson hit an RBI single and then Anna Griffioen hit a bases clearing triple to take a 4-0 early lead.
Berlynn Keller came in for relief in the second and gave up one unearned run in the fourth as Cornerstone extended their lead to five. Although Lourdes' pitching staff gave up five runs in the game, only two of them were earned due to a pair of errors.
The momentum shifted slightly to Lourdes after
Taylor Leggins hit an RBI single in the fifth inning to cut the lead to four. Later, in the sixth inning,
Jessyca Smith knocked in an RBI off of a Cornerstone error. Unfortunately, the two runs weren't enough to make up for the Cornerstone second inning as Lourdes dropped their second game in Grand Rapids.
