Softball Battles Hard in WHAC Semifinal Loss to Indiana Tech

The Gray Wolves end the season with multiple program records broken

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Lourdes softball team (14-19, 9-11 in WHAC) were defeated by the (RV) Indiana Tech Warriors (33-14, 14-16 in WHAC) in the conference tournament semifinals earlier this afternoon.

The Fort Wayne pod host team beat Lourdes by a run twice in the tournament and will now take on the winner of the Madonna/Cornerstone game in the championship series next week.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, Lourdes still had one of its best seasons in program history. The Gray Wolves' 14-19 overall record and 9-11 conference record are both the high marks at Lourdes. This was also just the 5th WHAC tournament appearance and 2nd - furthest postseason run in program history.

The Gray Wolves got down early when Indiana Tech's Alyssa Harvey hit an RBI-single in the first inning to give the Warriors' a 1-0 lead. Indiana Tech's ace pitcher Savannah Bravo once again had a great game on the mound and was cruising through the first time and a half through the Lourdes batting order.

It wasn't until Skylar Mitchell launched a two-run home run in the fourth inning that the Gray Wolves got momentum on their side. The home run ignited the bench and brought new life to Lourdes as they took a 2-1 lead.

However, in the bottom half of the fourth inning, Indiana Tech struck back with a Melissa Cabrera RBI-single to tie the game.

With the game still tied at two apiece entering the fifth inning, sophomore Cassi Kieper came to pitch in relief for Lourdes. Kieper gave up a single and a lead-changing RBI-double to Mae Griffore before working out of the jam with just the one run allowed.

Lourdes had a chance to tie the game back up in the sixth, but they were thwarted by the Warriors' defense. After two quick outs, Liv Hickman walked to put some pressure on Indiana Tech. Senior outfielder Lauren Schuller pinch-ran for Hickman.

The next batter was Olivia Rompf, who has consistently been one of the best hitters for Lourdes over the last month of the season. Rompf continued her offensive dominance with a double to left field. Schuller rounded second and third but was gunned down at home plate by third baseman Carlye Walter on the relay. The clutch defensive play ended the inning with the Warriors' remaining up by a run.

Indiana Tech ended up winning the game in the seventh after Lourdes went three-up, three-down, sending the Warriors to the championship series.
