Gil Guerrero

Gil Guerrero was named the head men’s and women’s golf coach at Lourdes University in March of 2014, becoming just the second head coach in program history.

Since his arrival at Lourdes, the men’s team has posted its best nine team stroke averages in program history, setting a new record at 304.2 in 2016-2017.  His 2016-2017 squad also turned in the first under par round in program history, the best team round ever at Lourdes.  He has also coached the school’s individual record-holder.

In 2019-2020, Guerrero produced the first men’s player in program history to earn First Team All Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference accolades.  In addition, during his tenure at Lourdes, he has had 10 men earn Second Team All-WHAC accolades and another garner Honorable Mention All-WHAC honors.  In addition, Guerrero has had 24 men’s players represented on the WHAC All-Academic Team.  The men’s program has been named a NAIA Scholar Team nine times while Guerrero has been at the helm, and he has had 21 men named NAIA Scholar-Athletes.

On the women’s side, 33 players have been named to the WHAC All-Academic Team during his time at Lourdes with 27 also earning NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors.  In addition, the women have been named a NAIA Scholar Team seven times. 
 
Guerrero served as the head boy's golf coach at St. Francis De Sales High School in Toledo in 2013, but prior to that spent 2006-2012 as the head golf coach at Owens Community College.  At Owens, he led the Express to three Ohio Community College Athletic Conference titles and was a three-time OCCAC Coach of the Year.  He helped Owens qualify for the NJCAA national championship in 2008 as a head coach and in 2006 as an assistant.  In addition, he had two individual qualifiers during his tenure at the school.  Guerrero also had two teams finish NJCAA regional runner-up.
 
Guerrero coached a NJCAA All-American and had two players earn Academic All-American honors, one with exemplary honors and another with superior honors.  He also had 10 golfers earn Academic All-OCCAC accolades.
 
Prior to his stint at Owens, Guerrero was the head boy's coach at Start High School in Toledo for 20 seasons.  He coached three City League individual champions and had three City League Players of the Year.  Ten of his golfers qualified for regionals and he had 17 players earn First Team All-City League accolades.  Twice he led the Spartans to a City League runner-up finish.

Guerrero began his career in golf in 1980 as the head golf professional at Ottawa Park Golf Course in Toledo, a position he held through 1985.  He is a 1972 graduate of Syracuse University with a bachelor's degree in Arts and Sciences and earned a master's degree in Education at Bowling Green State University.
