David Espinoza was named the second Lourdes University head cross country coach in program history for both the men and women in February of 2015.
Since his arrival at Lourdes, he helped his runners break every school record for the women and three of the four distances for the men. With the women, Espinoza has produced six members on the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference All-Academic Team, and the squad was named a NAIA Scholar Team each of his first three seasons. In addition, he has had two women named NAIA Scholar-Athletes. In 2016, Espinoza was also named the WHAC Champions of Character Coach for the women.
Espinoza has produced two WHAC All-Academic Team members on the men’s side as well as a NAIA Scholar-Athlete.
Espinoza also was Lourdes’ head men’s and women’s track and field coach for the 2016-2017 season, creating the programs from scratch. He had a member of his men’s team qualify for the NAIA National Championship in the discus in 2017 while also producing a WHAC All-Academic Team member. On the women’s side, Espinoza’s track team had two WHAC All-Academic Team selections, and was named a NAIA Scholar-Team. Espinoza was also named the WHAC Champions of Character Coach for both the men and the women.
Prior to Lourdes, Espinoza was an assistant track and field coach at Sylvania Northview High School during the 2014 season and also served one season as an assistant track coach at Whitmer High School. While at Whitmer he helped guide a regional qualifier in the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m runs.
A four-year letterwinner while running at Bluffton University, he set the indoor 5,000m school record for the Beavers, a mark that stood until the 2014 season. He also holds the second fasted 10,000m outdoor time in school history. In cross country, he posted the team’s fastest mark during the 2004 season and earned Heartland Conference Runner of the Week honors that same season.
Espinoza was the 2001 Runner of the Year in the Great Lakes League as a prep performer at Whitmer High School and was the league’s individual champion that same season. He was also a two-time GLL champion in the 3200m and won the 1600m in 2002.
Espinoza has been an Ohio High School Athletic Association cross country and track and field official since 2007 and is currently the president of the Northwest Ohio Cross Country and Track and Field Officials Association. He holds a USATF Level 2 certification in endurance and throws.
A 2007 graduate of Bluffton University, Espinoza received his bachelor's degree in health, recreation, and physical education.
