Barry Spitzer was named Lourdes University's men's head soccer coach in November of 2014, with the charge of starting the program for the 2015 season.
Entering his fourth season as the Gray Wolves’ head coach in 2018, Spitzer sports an 18-26-4 record both at Lourdes and for his career as a men’s coach at four-year schools. In 2017, Spitzer produced the first Second Team All Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference selection in program history, and he coached a pair of All-Ohio performers during the inaugural campaign. In addition, five players have earned Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors under his guidance.
Spitzer’s players have also excelled in the classroom at Lourdes. In 2016, he produced a CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team selection while a pair of student-athletes earned Academic All-District accolades. He has also has had two players named to the Academic All-Ohio First Team while three have been named to the WHAC All-Academic Team. Spitzer has also produced a pair of NAIA Scholar-Athletes.
Spitzer arrived at Lourdes after spending eight seasons at Wallace State Community College. He compiled 98-18-8 record while at Wallace State and was a two-time Region 22 Coach of the Year. Spitzer guided the Lions to seven Region 22 championships as well as Southeast District playoff appearances, with Wallace State finishing district runner-up three times. His 2008 team earned the NJCAA Academic Team of the Year Award, compiling the nation’s best grade point average.
Prior to coaching at Wallace State, Spitzer was the head women’s soccer coach at Samford University where he helped start the Bulldogs NCAA Division I program. In seven seasons at Samford, he posted a 38-32-11 mark.
Spitzer began his coaching career as the head varsity coach at John Carroll High School in Birmingham, Ala. before moving to Tallahassee, Fla. in 1991 to become the head coach at Rickards High School. He also spent time as a staff head coach for Top of Florida while in Tallahassee.
He moved into collegiate coaching in 1994 as a graduate assistant for both the men’s and women’s programs at the University of South Alabama before spending the 1995 season as an assistant coach for NAIA Thomas University.
Spitzer has his United States Soccer Federation "A" License, a National Soccer Coaches Association of America Premier Diploma, a National Soccer Coaches Association of America Level II Goalkeeper Diploma, and 17 years of college coaching experience.
A 1992 graduate of Florida State University with a degree in visual arts, Spitzer earned his master’s at South Alabama with a concentration in exercise science.
