For the second straight day Lourdes' softball team dropped a pair of games at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. The Gray Wolves fell 8-1 in their opener against Ave Maria before losing a 2-1 non-conference contest against fellow Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference foe Cornerstone.
Seven errors in the opener proved to be the downfall for Lourdes in the contest with the Gyrenes, as they led to all eight Ave Maria runs. The Gyrnes scored two runs in each of the first four innings before the Gray Wolves got on the scoreboard.
In the fifth,
Ashley Yeager (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) was hit by a pitch with one out and stole second. She moved to third on a passed ball and eventually scored on the back end of a double steal after
Lauren Marstin (Brookneal, Va./William Campbell H.S.) walked and stole second on the front end.
Kasey Graham (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (0-2), despite not allowing an earned run. She gave up five hits in four innings of work, walking three and striking out two. Emily Lemin earned the win (1-1) for Ave Maria (8-9), giving up five hits and one unearned run while going the distance. She struck out eight.
“We didn't start with the aggressive attack like we had yesterday,” head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said. “We committed too many errors. I was proud of how we rebounded in game two though.”
Game two saw Cornerstone (2-1) score single runs in the second and fifth, but
Casey Cherry (Comstock Park, Mich./Comstock Park H.S.) kept the Gray Wolves in the game from the circle. The junior went the distance, scattering nine hits in the loss (0-2), walking just two while striking out one.
“Casey pitched really well today,” Gordon added. “It should be a big confidence boost for her.”
Rachel Nelson, who picked up the win (1-0) held Lourdes hitless until the seventh when
Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a RBI groundout by
Hayley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) for the Gray Wolves lone run of the game.
Heidi Warmelink came on to earn the save for the Golden Eagles.
Lourdes (0-4) will return to the diamond on Tuesday for a pair of games. The Gray Wolves will face Point Park at 1 p.m. and Bellevue (Neb.) at 3 p.m.
