In its second game of the day, Lourdes picked up the first victory in program history on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Bellevue (Neb.) 3-2 at the National Training Center in Claremont, Fla. The Gray Wolves fell in their opening game of the day 7-4 against Point Park.
Lourdes scored quickly in the victory over Bellevue, taking advantage of an unearned run.
Lauren Marstin (Brookneal, Va./William Campbell H.S.) reached on an error to lead off the game and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. She moved to third on a single by
Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) and scored on a passed ball.
The Bruins tied the game in the fourth with an unearned run, taking advantage of a Lourdes error.
The Gray Wolves took the lead for good in the sixth as
Hillary West (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) doubled home Megyesi.
Leslie Hafler (Randolph, Ohio/Waterloo H.S.) pinch ran for West and scored on a single up the middle by
Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.).
Bellevue got one run back in the bottom of the sixth, but Marstin came on in relief of Cherry to get the final two outs of the inning. She then pitched a scoreless seventh to earn her first collegiate save.
Casey Cherry (Comstock Park, Mich./Comstock Park H.S.) earned the win (1-2) in the circle, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing one earned run and three hits. She struck out two.
Megyesi had two of the Gray Wolves' four hits against Shelby Kindelin, who took the loss (2-2) for Bellevue (7-3). Kindelin went the distance, striking out seven.
In the opener on Tuesday, Point Park picked up a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first, taking advantage of a pair of Lourdes errors. The Gray Wolves picked up one run in the bottom of the inning as
Chelsea Goebel (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) scored on a passed ball after reaching on an error.
The Gray Wolves took the lead in the third, scoring three times. Marstin led off reaching on a Pioneers' error and Megyesi walked. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners up 60 feet,
Hayley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) delivered a two-run double. Mosiniak followed with a single to plate Roberts, giving Lourdes a 4-2 lead.
Point Park (4-2) picked up one run in the fourth and scored three more times in the fifth to take the lead. Ashley Morran's two-run double put the Pioneers in front in the top of the fifth inning. Point Park added an insurance run in the sixth to close out the scoring.
Taylor Derr (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) had two hits for Lourdes, as the Gray Wolves tallied seven on the afternoon.
Kasey Graham (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss, allowing five runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits, in 4.1 innings of work. Harley Hannah earned the complete game victory, giving up two earned runs on seven hits.
Lourdes (1-5) will have Wednesday off before returning to action on Thursday evening. The Gray Wolves will face Saint Francis (Ill.) at 5 p.m. before battling Hannibal-LaGrange at 7 p.m.
