Softball Splits a Pair on Thusday Night

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Lourdes bounced back from a disappointing opening game on Thursday evening to post a 6-5 victory in nine innings over Hannibal-LaGrange in the second contest of the night at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.  The Gray Wolves fell in five innings to Saint Francis (Ill.) in the opener.

In the victory over Hannibal-LaGrange, Lourdes had to battle back from a pair of deficits.  The Trojans took advantage of a pair of Gray Wolf errors in the second inning to score two unearned runs and take the early lead.  The advantage grew to 3-0 in the fourth before Lourdes battled back.

In the bottom of the sixth Hillary West (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) hit her first collegiate round-tripper, a solo shot to left-center to put the Gray Wolves on the scoreboard.  With two outs, Taylor Duvall (Newport, Mich./Jefferson H.S.) recorded a pinch-hit double before Ashley Yeager (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) followed with a two-bagger of her own to drive in a run.  Leslie Hafler (Randolph, Ohio/Waterloo H.S>) then singled to tie the game, and ultimately forced extra innings.

Both teams had a good scoring opportunity in the eighth, as the international tie-breaker put a runner on second to start the inning.  Neither team could produce though, moving the game into the ninth.  Hannibal-LaGrange plated two in the top of the frame, setting the stage for Lourdes second comeback of the game.

Yeager started the inning on second and Hafler drew a walk.  Lauren Marstin (Brookneal, Va./William Campbell H.S.) reached on a fielder's choice to short, loading the bases as the throw to third was late.  Chelsea Goebel (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) plated the first run of the inning on another fielder's choice as the throw to the plate to try to cut down Yeager was late.  Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) then delivered a two-run game-winning double to the gap in left-center, giving her a team-leading eight RBI on the year.

“I was very pleased with how we rebounded, not once, but twice after falling behind to come back and win,” head coach Jo Ann Gordon said afterwards.  “We needed it after the first game.”

Kasey Graham (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) earned the win (1-4) with four innings of relief, giving up two unearned runs on just one hit.  Kachina Hudson went the distance for Hannibal-LaGrange, taking the loss.

Goebel had three hits for the Gray Wolves and Hafler added two more as Lourdes had 10 on the night, helping to make up for five errors in the game.

In the opener it was the second inning that did the Gray Wolves in, as the Fighting Saints scored all eight runs in the inning while sending 13 batters to the plate.  A two-run home run and a pair of doubles accounted for five of the runs and Lourdes was unable to get the bats going offensively, managing just two hits in the contest.

Graham suffered the loss in the circle, pitching just 1.2 innings while giving up eight runs on eight hits.  Jasmine Sifuentez picked up the victory (4-0) for Saint Francis (6-2).

Lourdes (2-6) will face Grace at 1 p.m. and Spring Arbor at 3 p.m. on Friday as the Gray Wolves move toward the end of their annual spring trip.
