Lourdes picked up the first two home victories in program history on Tuesday afternoon, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader against Saint Francis (Ind.) 7-4 and 6-2 at Pacesetter Park.
“We got some good situational hitting today and did a nice job of stringing hits together,” head coach
Jo Ann Gordon stated after the victory. “When you put all three phases of the game together, it usually equals positive results.”
Saint Francis struck first in both games, taking advantage of Lourdes errors. In the opener, two Gray Wolf miscues led to three unearned runs in the first inning after Alyssa Keller singled home a pair of Cougars.
Lourdes battled back, tying the game in the third, all with two outs.
Chelsea Goebel (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) reached on a bunt single and scored on
Ashley Yeager's (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) triple to right.
Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) followed with a run-scoring double and scored one batter later on
Hayley Roberts' (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) single.
Casey Cherry (Comstock Park, Mich./Comstock Park H.S.) kept Saint Francis off of the scoreboard after the first until the sixth, giving the offense the chance to take the lead. Lourdes did just that in the fourth.
Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) delivered a two-run single that plated Yeager and Roberts to put the Gray Wolves on top 5-3. Two batters later,
Taylor Duvall (Newport, Mich./Jefferson H.S.) increased the lead with a two-run single scoring Mosiniak and
Lauren Marstin (Brookneal, Va./William Campbell H.S.).
“I was really pleased with our comeback in game one after giving up those three runs in the first inning,” Gordon added.
The Cougars scored one in the sixth on a Lourdes error, but Cherry stranded the bases loaded to work out of further trouble.
Cherry earned the win (4-7), scattering five hits over seven innings. All four runs she surrendered were unearned and she walked three while striking out five. Jackie Beilfuss suffered the loss (2-8) for Saint Francis, giving up seven runs and 11 hits in 4.1 innings of work.
Marstin finished the opener 3-for-3 at the plate while Goebel, Yeager, and Roberts all had two hits each as part of a 13-hit attack.
Saint Francis against took advantage of a Lourdes error in the opening inning of game two to score an unearned run but left the bases loaded, allowing the Gray Wolves to come to bat trailing by just one. Lourdes answered with two runs of its own in the first. Yeager scored on an error by the Cougars and Duvall drew a bases loaded walk to plate Roberts, putting the hosts in front.
A two-run single in the third by
Hillary West (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) scored Mosiniak and Marstin to increase the Lourdes advantage to 4-1 before Yeager crossed the plate again in the fifth following a Cougar error.
In the sixth Goebel grounded out with runners on the corners to score Lourdes' sixth run, helping lift the Gray Wolves to its second doubleheader sweep of the season.
Saint Francis (9-16) added its final run with a run-scoring single in the sixth.
Kasey Graham (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) went the distance for the victory (3-10) in the circle, giving up just one earned run and five hits while striking out three. Kortney Holliday suffered the loss (4-2), allowing five runs, two of which were earned, and five hits in four innings of work. She walked seven.
Mosiniak went 3-for-4 in the nightcap while West had two hits and drove home two runs.
“This gives us lots of positive momentum heading into tomorrow's conference games,” Gordon concluded.
Lourdes (7-17) will remain at home on Wednesday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Concordia (Mich.) in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader. First pitch in game one of the twinbill is slated for 4 p.m. at Pacesetter Park.
