Lourdes Earns Home Split with Concordia (Mich.)

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Lourdes won the opening game of Wednesday afternoon's home doubleheader with Concordia (Mich.) 3-2 at Pacesetter Park, but the Cardinals then ended the Gray Wolves' longest winning streak of the season at three with an 8-5 victory in game two.

Game one was a pitcher's duel between Casey Cherry (Comstock Park, Mich./Comstock Park H.S.) and Concordia's Kortney Loar through three-and-a-half innings until the game was delayed for 36 minutes due to lightning in the area.  Cherry had allowed just two hits in her first four innings in the circle while Loar had yet to yield a hit when the teams were pulled off the field with one out in the bottom of the fourth.

Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.), the second batter to face Loar after the delay, broke up the no-hitter and the shutout with one swing of the bat, her second home run of the season to leftfield, a solo shot.

Jess Barjaktarovich answered with a home run of her own in the top of the fifth to tie the game at one before the Gray Wolves retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth.  Hillary West (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) doubled with one out and Chelsea Goebel (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) followed with a single through the leftside, scoring Leslie Hafler (Randolph, Ohio/Waterloo H.S.), who ran for West.

Concordia led off with a single in the sixth and Grace Muller followed with a triple to tie the game at two with none out, but Cherry stranded her at third, not yielding the lead.

Lourdes scored what would be the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth as Mosiniak drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second.  Taylor Derr (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) ran for Mosiniak, scoring on a two-out single by Leah Silvestri (Navarre, Ohio/Fairless H.S.).

“I was so happy to see Leah come through with the big hit for us,” head coach Jo Ann Gordon stated.

Cherry then set the side down in order in the seventh to earn the complete game victory (5-7).  She scattered just six hits and walked three while striking out four on the afternoon.

Loar suffered the loss (8-6), giving up four hits and five walks while going the distance, striking out seven.

The Gray Wolves again scored first in game two as Hayley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) led off the second with a single, stole second, and moved to third on a groundout.  Lauren Marstin's (Brookneal, Va./William Campbell H.S.) groundout plated Roberts with the game's first run.

Concordia answered with two runs in the third to take the lead on a sacrifice fly and a two-out single.  The Cardinals increased the lead to 5-1 in the fifth, scoring three times on four hits, with the final two runs scoring after two were out.

Lourdes cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs.  Taylor Duvall (Newport, Mich./Jefferson H.S.) singled with one out and scored on Derr's triple to right.  Goebel followed with a single up the middle to score Derr, making it a 5-3 game.

Grace Muller hit a three-run home run to straight away centerfield in the top of the sixth to increase the Cardinals' lead to 8-3 before Lourdes scored two more runs in the bottom of the frame.  Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) led off with a walk and scored two batters later on a triple to right by Mosiniak.  Marstin followed with an infield single, plating Mosiniak with the final run of the game.

Corrina Rotondo earned the win (6-4) for Concordia, scattering six hits and walking two while striking out five in the complete game effort.  Kasey Graham (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (3-11), allowing five runs and 11 hits in 4.2 innings of work.

Concordia (16-14-1, 4-6 WHAC) tallied 15 hits in the victory.

Lourdes (8-18, 3-5) will take to the road on Saturday afternoon, traveling to Grand Rapids, Mich. to battle Cornerstone.  First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
