Lourdes beat the rain and Indiana Tech on Tuesday afternoon in the opener of a doubleheader 7-1 at Havenhurst Park in New Haven, Ind. in a key game in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play. The Gray Wolves were not so lucky with the rain in game two, however, as the contest was suspended in the middle of the fourth inning with Lourdes leading 3-1.
“I am really pleased with the way we came out and swung the bats today,” head coach
Jo Ann Gordon said after the games. “We came ready to play, and played some solid defense as well. We put all three phases of the game together.”
The Gray Wolves offense scored early and often in the first three innings to build its lead.
Chelsea Goebel (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) led off the game with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a groundout moved her to third,
Hayley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven H.S.) singled through the left side to put Lourdes on top 1-0.
Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) followed with a triple to the gap in right-center, plating Roberts, and scored herself on an infield single by
Lauren Marstin (Brookneal, Va./William Campbell H.S.) to make it 3-0 before
Casey Cherry (Comstock Park, Mich./Comstock Park H.S.) took to the circle.
Lourdes added to its lead in the second as
Leah Silvestri (Navarre, Ohio/Fairless H.S.) and
Hillary West (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) led off the inning with back-to-back hits.
Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) cleared the bases with a two-run double to right-center, making it 5-0 Gray Wolves.
Marstin added her second infield single of the game to lead off the third and moved around the base paths, scoring on an errant throw.
Taylor Duvall (Newport, Mich./Jefferson H.S.) doubled to lead off the sixth inning, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on West's sacrifice fly for the Gray Wolves seventh run.
Meanwhile, Cherry kept the Warriors off of the scoreboard for the most part. Indiana Tech's lone run came in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI single by Tori Kilps.
Cherry went the distance in the win (6-8), scattering just six hits, all singles. She walked just one while striking out three. Kilps took the loss (2-2) in the circle for Indiana Tech (9-23, 2-8 WHAC), giving up six runs and eight hits in four innings of work.
Marstin and West led Lourdes' nine-hit attack with two hits each while Megyesi drove home a pair of runs.
Game two started before the rain came, and Lourdes again jumped on top quickly. Goebel led off with a bunt single and came around to score on a throwing error.
Indiana Tech answered with a RBI single in the bottom of the inning, only to have the Gray Wolves retake the lead in the second. Marstin led off with a single and moved up 60 feet on a sacrifice bunt. After moving to third on a flyout, she scored on the front end of a double steal attempt with runners on the corners.
Roberts delivered a run-scoring single in the third, plating
Ashley Yeager (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) with Lourdes third run of the game, making it 3-1.
The rains came, and play was halted in the middle of the fourth inning with the Gray Wolves still on top.
Kasey Graham (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) started the nightcap in the circle, and had allowed four hits through three innings. Sam Berrios was in the circle for Indiana Tech, giving up all three runs on four hits through four innings.
The second game will may resume on Sunday, pending the WHAC standings. If the game affects the tournament seedings, it will need to be completed, otherwise it would be cancelled. If it is not resumed, the stats accumulated in game two would be erased.
With the win, Lourdes climbs into sixth place in the conference standings. The Gray Wolves will return to the diamond on Wednesday afternoon to make up another league doubleheader, traveling to Grand Rapids, Mich. First pitch of the twinbill with Cornerstone is slated for 4 p.m.
