Lourdes Softball Sweeps Michigan-Dearborn in WHAC Debut

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Lourdes softball team scored 13 runs in the opener and hit three home runs while limiting Michigan-Dearborn to just three hits in the nightcap as the Gray Wolves swept the Wolves 13-6 and 5-1 in the program's first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference games in history.

“It was exciting to finally get back out on the field for the first time in three-and-a-half weeks,” head coach Jo Ann Gordon said after the wins.  “It was great to get the sweep.  We really came out swinging the bats aggressively.”

Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) went 4-for-5 with three runs scores in the opener while Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) added three hits for the Gray Wolves.

Mosiniak put Lourdes on top in the opening inning with a sacrifice fly and Megyesi expanded the lead to 2-0 with a RBI single in the third.  An error and a ground out helped the visitors plate two more runs in the fourth to double its advantage.

Lourdes made it 7-0 in the fifth as three straight singles along with a Taylor Duvall (Newport, Mich./Jefferson H.S.) double scored three runs.  Michigan-Dearborn answered the three runs in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of an error for unearned tallies.

The Gray Wolves took advantage of two Wolves errors in the sixth to score three more runs, and added three unearned tallies in the seventh to offset a Michigan-Dearborn run in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

Hillary West (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) and Megyesi each had two RBI in the game as Lourdes pounded out 16 hits and took advantage of seventh Wolf errors.

Kasey Graham (Oregon, Ohio/Oregon H.S.) went the distance in the circle, allowing just two earned runs and scattering six hits while striking out seven to earn the win (2-6).  Erika Soulworth suffered the loss (2-5), giving up seven runs in four innings.

In game two Lourdes played long ball.  Entering the game with five home runs on the season, the Gray Wolves hit three round-trippers in the victory.  Casey Cherry (Comstock Park, Mich./Comstock Park H.S.) tossed a three-hitter in the circle for the win (2-4), striking out eight in the complete game victory.  As a team Lourdes played errorless ball.

“I was really pleased with how well we came back defensively in game two,” Gordon added.  “We made several errors in the first game, but played good defense in game two.”

Michigan-Dearborn (4-21, 0-2 WHAC) scored its lone run in the opening inning before Lourdes began swinging the bats.  Haley Roberts (Brownstown, Mich./Brownstown H.S.) hit her first collegiate home run in the second inning, a solo shot, before adding a two-run single in the sixth to make it a three-RBI game for the freshman.  Ashley Yeager (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview H.S.) added her first home run of her career later in the sixth to put the Gray Wolves on top 4-1.

Megyesi rounded out the scoring in the seventh with a solo blast with two outs in the inning, giving the rookie four home runs already on the year.

Mosiniak, Roberts, and Yeager all had two hits for Lourdes, as the Gray Wolves added 12 more hits in game two.  Lindsay Colasinski suffered the loss (0-7) for the Wolves, pitching all seven innings for the hosts.

Lourdes (4-10, 2-0) will step out of WHAC play on Friday afternoon to travel to Berea, Ohio to face Baldwin Wallace.  First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 3:30 p.m.
