Lourdes Softball Drops Road Twinbill at Baldwin Wallace

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Lourdes softball team stepped out of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play on Friday afternoon, traveling to Berea, Ohio for a doubleheader with Baldwin Wallace.  The Gray Wolves came up on the short end of the score in both contests at the Cuyahoga Fairgrounds Field, falling 10-2 and 8-7.

“We need to find some consistency in all three phases of the game – offense, defense, and pitching,” head coach Jo Ann Gordon said.  “We had runners in scoring position several times today and didn't get them in.  We need to work on our situational hitting.  Defensively we had a few errors that led to big innings as well.”

Game one saw the Gray Wolves score first in the opening inning as Lauren Marstin (Brookneal, Va./William Campbell H.S.) singled and scored one batter later on a Bre Megyesi (Whitehouse, Ohio/Anthony Wayne H.S.) double to left-center.

The Yellow Jackets responded with three runs in the bottom of the first, two on a single by Brittany Lightel, to take the lead for good.  An unearned run in the second increased the hosts lead to 4-1, a margin which would remain into the fifth.

Taylor Derr (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer H.S.) led off the fifth with a bunt single, stole second, and moved to third when the throw sailed into centerfield.  Marstin then grounded out to score Derr, cutting the Lourdes deficit to 4-2.

Baldwin Wallace closed out the game with six runs in the sixth inning, taking advantage of three Gray Wolf errors in the frame which led to five unearned runs.

Nikki Peskura earned the win (1-0) in the circle for the Yellow Jackets, tossing five innings and allowing just one earned run on six hits.  Kasey Graham (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (2-7), going the distance but allowing just four earned runs.

“I don't think our offensive approach was as aggressive today as it was on Wednesday,” Gordon added.

Lourdes again jumped on top in game two as Megan Mosiniak (Swanton, Ohio/Evergreen H.S.) singled home Marstin.

The Yellow Jackets answered with two in the second before Hillary West (Walbridge, Ohio/Lake H.S.) singled home Mosiniak in the third to tie the game at two.  Again Baldwin Wallace plated two in the bottom of the third to retake the lead but once again Lourdes fought back.  In the fourth Derr homered to lead off the inning, her first collegiate round-tripper, and Mosiniak plated Chelsea Goebel (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold H.S.) later in the frame on a groundout to tie the game at four.

After Baldwin Wallace (12-4) took an 8-4 lead after five, Megyesi hit her fifth home run of the season in the sixth to pull within three.  The Gray Wolves then tried to rally in the seventh but came up one run short.  Derr scored on an error and Marstin followed with a RBI single with two outs, but was stranded on second as the tying run.

Mosiniak and West each had two of Lourdes 10 hits in the nightcap.  Casey Cherry (Comstock Park, Mich./Comstock Park H.S.) suffered the loss (2-5), allowing just two earned runs and eight hits while going the distance.  Lourdes committed four errors in the game for the second time on the day.  Tabitha Murray picked up the win (10-3), allowing three earned runs and seven hits in 5.2 innings of relief.

Lourdes (4-12) will return to Pacesetter Park for its home opener on Sunday afternoon as the Gray Wolves host Davenport.  First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
